In relationships, you often believe you truly know your partner
But for one man who had been in an eight-year relationship, the girlfriend he loved dearly revealed that she had initially been using him to get over her ex
The man went on to reveal additional details about his situation
It's important to give yourself some space after a breakup, and going no contact can make it easier to begin healing and emotionally detach from your ex
Most of us would agree that there are different kinds of breakups. There are the mutual ones, where both people know the relationship has run its course and, while it may still hurt, there’s a certain sense of acceptance. Then there are the messy breakups, where arguments, unanswered questions, or lingering feelings make moving on much harder. And, of course, there are the breakups that completely knock the wind out of you—the ones where you genuinely can't imagine feeling okay again. But even the deepest heartbreak can eventually become easier to carry. The question is, how long does it actually take to get over someone?
Research by Jia Y. Chong and R. Chris Fraley suggests that, given enough time, most people do eventually become less emotionally attached to their ex-partners. Their findings showed that emotional bonds tended to fade gradually after a breakup, eventually reaching a point where former partners could feel about as emotionally distant as strangers. On average, participants appeared to be roughly halfway to fully letting go of their previous relationships around four years after the breakup. However, that timeline was far from universal. How quickly someone moves on can depend on a range of factors, including the nature of the relationship, how it ended, and the emotional attachment that existed in the first place.
And just as everyone experiences heartbreak differently, people also have very different ways of trying to move forward. Some throw themselves into work, friendships, hobbies, or exercise, while others need time alone to process what happened. In Getting Past Your Breakup: How to Turn a Devastating Loss into the Best Thing That Ever Happened to You, author Susan J. Elliott discusses several strategies for rebuilding your life after a painful breakup. One of her most important suggestions is the strict “no contact” rule. Elliott argues that trying to remain friends with an ex immediately after a breakup can make healing more difficult because continued contact can keep you emotionally tied to the relationship and make it harder to adjust to life without that person.
Elliott also encourages people to think about heartbreak as a form of grief. A breakup can involve many of the same emotional experiences associated with other major losses, including denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, and eventually acceptance. Rather than trying to distract yourself from every uncomfortable feeling or immediately jumping into another relationship, she emphasizes acknowledging what you're going through. Healing doesn't necessarily mean pretending that the relationship didn't matter. Sometimes, it means accepting that it mattered deeply and still choosing to move forward.
Another difficult part of moving on can be letting go of the idea that you need closure from your ex. It's natural to want an explanation, an apology, or one final conversation that somehow makes everything make sense. But Elliott argues that waiting for another person to provide that sense of closure can keep you emotionally stuck. Sometimes, closure has to come from within. You may never receive the explanation you wanted, and you may never fully understand why someone made the choices they did. Moving forward can mean accepting that uncertainty and deciding that you don't need someone else's permission to close that chapter of your life.
Of course, moving on can be much harder for some people than others. Psychology Today has discussed how people who already struggle with high levels of anxiety or have experienced multiple losses in the past may find abandonment particularly difficult to cope with. Losing a trusted partner can intensify feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, making it harder to imagine trusting someone or finding love again. For someone already carrying the weight of previous losses, a breakup may feel like much more than the end of one relationship—it can bring older fears and painful experiences rushing back to the surface.
Past experiences can also shape how someone responds to heartbreak, especially if they've dealt with abandonment, loss, or difficult relationships before
Another factor is feeling like you've lost the “perfect relationship.” When someone believes they've finally found the loving, reliable partner they've always wanted, being abandoned can feel especially devastating. They may begin to wonder whether they'll ever find something that meaningful again. In some cases, people can become so invested in the idea that they've finally found their perfect partner that they overlook warning signs or avoid asking whether the other person wants the same things from the relationship. They put everything they have into making the relationship work, hoping it will never end, which can make the eventual breakup feel even more overwhelming.
Past experiences can also shape how we respond to heartbreak. Psychology Today discusses how childhood experiences of abandonment can influence the way people approach relationships later in life. Children have little control over who stays in their lives, and repeated loss or instability can affect how they learn to trust others. As adults, some may become extremely fearful of being abandoned again, while others may become intensely attached because they are desperate to make sure the relationship doesn't disappear. These patterns aren't a person's fault, but understanding where they come from can sometimes make it easier to recognize them and work through them.
Ultimately, there isn't a universal timetable for getting over someone. One person might feel significantly better after a few months, while another may need years to fully make peace with what happened. Neither experience makes someone weak or means they're doing something wrong. Heartbreak can be especially complicated when it brings up older wounds, challenges someone's sense of self, or leaves them questioning whether they'll ever find love again. What matters is giving yourself enough time and space to heal rather than comparing your progress with someone else's. Sometimes moving on doesn't mean forgetting the person or pretending you never cared. It simply means reaching a point where the relationship no longer controls your present or determines how you see your future.
And coming back to today’s story, it's easy to understand why this breakup was especially devastating for the author. After spending eight years with someone, finding out that she wanted to be with her ex and felt that she had been using the relationship to get over him would be an incredibly painful thing to hear. Hopefully, with enough time and distance, the author can eventually stop looking back for answers he may never get and start focusing on what comes next. What do you think, Pandas? Could you move on after learning something like this about an eight-year relationship?
People had plenty to say about the entire situation
The author also shared his conversation with his girlfriend about what happened
People wished the author luck as he tried to move on from the entire fiasco
