October has always been my favorite month. The trees are breathtakingly beautiful, the weather’s not too hot or too cold, the air is fresh and crisp, and it’s the perfect time for long walks with hot chocolate or cozy movie nights. As we can see from this list, X users still managed to find the time to share hilarious content online during October.
Perhaps that’s because October is such a lovely month, so let's give it the appreciation it deserves. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac Store, October’s name stems from the Latin octo, which means eight, because it was the eighth month in the Roman calendar. Even though we now use a 12-month calendar, the name just stuck.
Depending on where you live, you may not celebrate any holidays during October. But if you live in North America, you might know that Leif Eriksson Day falls on October 9th. Then, October 12th has three holidays: Canadian Thanksgiving, Columbus Day (United States), and Indigenous Peoples’ Day (United States).
St. Luke’s Little Summer is celebrated on October 18th, and United Nations Day falls on October 24th. And of course, arguably the most popular holiday in all of October falls on the 31st: Halloween (or All Hallows’ Eve).
If you’re interested in astrology, October might be a particularly fascinating month for you. October’s full moon, also known as the Hunter’s Moon, fell on Monday, October 26th. And if you love looking at the sky, there was a Draconid meteor shower over the evenings of October 8th and 9th, as well as the Orionid meteor shower in the early mornings of October 21st and 22nd.
Arguably one of the best aspects of autumn is enjoying all of the seasonal produce and dishes. October is definitely one of the best times to eat plenty of pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes, root vegetables, apples, and pears. And if you’re an avid gardener, now is the best time to plant garlic and bulbs for spring flowers!
If you were born in October, first of all, happy belated birthday! And if you didn’t know, the birth flowers of October are cosmos and calendula, or marigold. Cosmos are symbols of joy in life, as well as love and peace. Meanwhile, calendula represents winning grace, grief, or chagrin in flower language. And if you’re curious about the birthstone of October, it’s opal, which symbolizes faithfulness and confidence.
If you’re a huge fan of Halloween, we don’t need to convince you that October is an amazing month. But even if you don’t love all things spooky and scary, there are plenty of ways to enjoy October. For example, did you know that it’s National Pizza Month? So hopefully, you enjoyed plenty of slices with your friends last month!
