Scenic Depictions, along with its other offshoot, Squatting Slavs in Tracksuits, has gained internet fame for its unique take on Slavic and Eastern European culture. When it was created in the mid-2010s, no other social platform catered to such an audience. 

Its creator, Matei Tabacu, previously spoke with Bored Panda and revealed that his posts eventually transcended borders beyond Slavic countries. It shows how powerful a connecting tool memes can be.

But if you’re an outsider, what could make you relate to these posts? According to Polish journalist, author, and social activist Magdalena Okraska, the self-deprecating nature of Slavic humor easily breaks cultural barriers. 

“By laughing at ourselves, we internalize the stereotypes about ourselves that Western Europe has created and disseminated, a Europe that determines the categories and terms used to describe the ‘other,’ the ‘foreigner,’” Okraska wrote. 

Okraska adds that knowing how to laugh at themselves and reinforcing Eastern European stereotypes in the process makes them more relatable. However, she also noted an element of nostalgia. 

“Their idea isn't meant to be satirical at all,” Okraska explained. “They want to weave a nostalgic tale of mythical nations that are simultaneously brave and cynical, vulgar and crazy, lazy and hard-working, colorful and gray. They want to unite all Slavs, or wanna-be Slavs, in a shared sigh for the past and joke about the present.”
