43 Halloween Fails These People Probably Wish They Could Bury

There’s a reason Halloween is one of the most anticipated nights of the year. Between the candy, costumes, and questionable horror movies, there’s plenty to look forward to. And this year, Americans were already getting into the spirit early. According to the National Retail Federation, nearly half of consumers planned to start their Halloween shopping in September or even earlier. Many simply couldn’t wait, saying they look forward to fall or count Halloween among their favorite holidays.
But when you put that much excitement into one night, there’s plenty of room for disappointment. Maybe the costume doesn’t turn out quite as planned, the party falls flat, or the candy isn’t nearly as good as you remembered. And sometimes, things go wrong in ways nobody could have anticipated.

#3 Bought A Bunch Of Candy For My First Halloween In A New House/State. Got About Six Trick Or Treaters

Top-down view of two plastic bowls filled with wrapped candy for Halloween fails
So, first of all, they don't celebrate Halloween on Oct 31 here if that falls on a weekend, so Trick or Treat was on Thursday Oct 29. That's sacrilege #1. Second, kids apparently don't knock on doors anymore and I was expected to be STANDING OUTSIDE TO HAND OUT CANDY. No. Third, I had decorations up, the porch light on, and the door open... and kids just walked past my house... BECAUSE I WASN'T OUTSIDE. Fourth, they started at like 5 PM and were done by 6:30 PM, because apparently... dark is scary...? IS THAT NOT THE POINT OF HALLOWEEN?

Part of the reason a bad Halloween feels worse than an ordinary bad night is that more is riding on it than we like to admit. Writing for Forbes, marketing professor Marcus Collins puts it neatly: “This isn’t about costumes and candy; this is about belonging.” That’s why, he says, any parent who has taken their kids trick-or-treating remembers exactly which houses kept their lights off or couldn’t even manage to put out a “take one” bowl. We quietly judge those neighbors and keep score, Collins admits, because opting out signals that you’re not really one of the group.

#6 Nobody Came To My Halloween Party

Half the guests cancelled in the time it took me to walk back from the store after buying all the food (and alcohol).
Edit: I know it's not Halloween yet. This is the week that worked for me.
Edit II: I love y'all. Did not realize Reddit had such a lust for mud pie/dirt. Another friend invited me out for drinks; life is good. AND I have the leftovers. Be well and stay spooky, friends.

He goes further, arguing that Halloween comes with a whole set of unspoken rules and social pressures, with spending money essentially becoming the price of admission. And the numbers seem to back him up. The NRF expected consumer spending on Halloween to reach $13.5 billion this year.

The NRF expected around $4.4 billion of that to go toward costumes, and here, too, there’s pressure. As Collins explains, a Halloween costume is generally expected to reference something other people will recognize. If nobody can work out what you’re dressed as, you’ve either picked something too obscure or failed to make your idea clear. Either way, he argues, it’s a social misstep.

I’m kind okay though, at least I got to show people my craft, but knowing the laziest person won is pretty infuriating. But why scream at the judges in anger as if they would listen. Smile, because I got to show people my cool creation.

#12 Left Out Halloween Treats Fur The Neighbors, Table, Bowl And Even The Cardboard Sign Got Stolen

Doorway decorated for spooky season with a sign reading Happy Halloween and candy on a table
We do this every year now, for the past 7 years, and this is a first. For some reason the 10$ ikea table, the pumpkin jar we painted and the cardboard sign were too appealing. When I went on the evening to pick it up, only the bats in the door and the tiny spider yarn were left.
Bizarre behavior 😄

But getting the reference right is only half the battle. Collins points out that a costume can be recognizable and still go down badly within a particular social circle. Dressing as a polarizing politician at a party full of people from the other side, for instance, might get the message across, but probably won’t win you many fans. What the costume says matters just as much as whether people get it.

#13 My Uber Driver Texted Me "I'm Scared" Then Drove Away & Cancelled My Ride

He arrived, rolled down the window and took straight off. I was just trying to get home from working at my haunted house lol.. best part is, his name was IMRAN. He literally ran. I guess he lives up to his name. Also, Halloween is in 2 days as I'm posting this so I didn't think this would be so out of the ordinary. My last uber driver wanted a selfie with me, but this guy just straight up ran away.
I couldn't even explain why I look like this because before I could explain he cancelled my ride and the messages vanished lol.
Also for anyone wondering why I didn't take it off before getting in the car, im always exhausted and dirty after the shift so my goal is to get straight to my home asap. that's why I take it all off when I get home.

In that sense, Collins sees choosing a costume as a kind of cultural signal, a way of showing that you understand the people around you and the references that matter to them. Then again, as much as you want to fit in, you don’t want to look like everyone else, either. A costume that’s too popular, he notes, is like turning up to a party in the same dress as half the guests. “We want to fit in but also stand out,” Collins writes. That’s not always easy to pull off (particularly if you consider the NRF expected some 4.8 million American adults to dress as witches this year).

But while costumes can be changed, swapped, or cobbled together the night before, the calendar can’t. And if you ask me, the true horror of Halloween is that it isn’t actually a day off. More often than not, it lands right on top of deadlines, exams, and early alarms. A Friday or Saturday Halloween is a welcome reprieve, but anyone who has dragged themselves to work after trick-or-treating with the kids, or after bingeing a horror marathon that ran until 4 a.m., knows how quickly the fun turns into a frightful morning.
