Bored Panda reached out to the LA-based cartoonist to learn more about his series. When asked to describe his work in just three words, Luke responded: 'thought-provoking, era-defining, tongue-in-cheek… the hyphens make those single words.'
Next, we were curious about what initially inspired the artist to start making comics. McGarry shared that his love for comics runs in the family: “My dad is a cartoonist, and so are all his friends – until I started grade school, I assumed that’s what adults did.”
Luke also gave us some insight into his creative process and shared where he draws inspiration from: “My comics are usually inspired by watching the news, something happening in pop culture, or just dumb ideas I come up with while stuck in traffic.”
When asked about comic artists or comedians whose work he particularly admires or draws influence from, the cartoonist shared: “Lately I’m really into Ernie Bushmiller and Chester Gould’s cartoons.”
Lastly, McGarry shared with us his favorite comic, one that was especially fun to create: “My favorite comic was inspired by a woman trying to give me a flyer for an improv show. She said, ‘You look like someone who enjoys improv,’ and I had to go take a long, hard look at myself in the mirror.”
