We wanted to know a little bit more about the artist himself and here's what he told us, “I am a 40-year-old German digital creator. I do different stuff like memes, collages, illustrations, and short video clips/animations. I started my creative way while studying product design from 2009 to 2012 in Schwäbisch Gmünd Germany.”
We noticed that most of Phol's work contained celebrities so we asked the artist if there was any reason behind that.
“To be honest, there is no special reason behind why I create mostly funny celebrity stuff. For me, it's just super fun to combine celebrities (or also famous movie scenes) with a funny or weird context, that's all… Well, ok, It‘s also really cool when some of them see and repost stuff from me, like Norman Reedus from The Walking Dead, he reposted a work series from me on Twitter a few weeks ago. That was mind-blowing!”
The artist is not stopping anytime soon when it comes to his work, “As long I have ideas for this topic…but as I said, I’m also creating stuff without celebrity background, depending on in which direction the concepts and ideas go.”
When asked about how he'd describe what he does to others, here's what Thomas told us.
I always said one thing to others, ‘I’m just creating weird, funny, and twisty stuff to entertain the people a little bit,…nothing more, nothing less.’ Do my works have an added value or impact on other people? I couldn't answer this question in the past.
But a few weeks ago, a woman who follows me reposted one of my works (it was a work with censored breasts for a context), as always, I thanked her for sharing, and she answered me:
'I’m sitting in a hospital having breast cancer treatment and it’s hilarious art like this that makes all the sitting around and waiting bearable. Art is powerful!'
To which I replied, ‘Oh, sorry to hear that, but I wish you and the others all the best for recovery.'
Within her last message she said, ‘It’s all good! Just wanted to tell you that art like yours gets some people through some really shitty days! Xx’
I had nothing more to say, but I think messages like these are very touching.”
With that being said we were curious if Thomas had a favorite meme that he made.
“I have to compare between my favorite and most successful memes. The most successful meme was the stars' look-alikes as animals using the Peter Parker meme which was one of my most reposted works ever.
However, my favorite is the ‘cheers’ collage I had created originally for New Year's Eve.
I always said one thing to others, ‘I’m just creating weird, funny, and twisty stuff to entertain the people a little bit,…nothing more, nothing less.’"
