Money can complicate friendships, especially when one person has significantly more than the other. It can create an uncomfortable power dynamic, which is why people often avoid discussing it.
A man knew this all too well when a wealthy childhood friend publicly humiliated him for struggling financially. Worse, it happened at one of his favorite restaurants, where he believes they permanently banned him.
Yet despite the shaming, he still wondered whether he needed thicker skin after feeling terrible about what happened.

How we spend money reflects our values, which can affect friendships
The author and his friend Terry are just two of the many people whose friendship money ruined. But if Terry hadn’t flaunted his wealth the way he did, their relationship would have likely remained intact.
According to author and friendship expert Anna Goldfarb, a person’s net worth can say a lot about their values.
“Money can create friction in a friendship because how we spend is a reflection of values. And one of the biggest reasons friends break up is a mismatch in values,” she said.
“The issue here, more succinctly, is ‘Do we value money in the same way? Is there a mismatch here?’”
Goldfarb also pointed out that many friendships have shifted from a “favor culture” (like borrowing sugar or grabbing rides to the airport) to an entertainment-focused one. She noted that today’s adult friendships are more about “What can you do with each other?”
This was clear in the story, when Terry pretty much coerced the author into joining them for a fancy dinner. He did this even though he knew his friend was struggling financially and couldn’t afford an expensive meal.
People with different wealth levels can still be friends and maintain a close relationship for a long time. But to do so, they need honest communication.
“Friends can look out for each other’s concerns and non-verbal expressions such as frustration and what they suggest as their preferred destination, eating places, et cetera,” she said.
Chen added that showing sensitivity to each other’s preferences can improve group dynamics. She said it’s primarily about reassuring everyone that their monetary and non-monetary contributions are equal.
The author’s situation is difficult to navigate because someone he considered a friend since childhood belittled him. He also admitted this likely won’t be the last incident with Terry, which is reasonable to expect.
Feeling terrible about what happened in the restaurant wasn’t an overreaction. If anything, what the author experienced was a warning of what was to come and a likely sign to rethink the friendship.
