The best friendships are built on trust, care, and reciprocity, but both folks have to uphold them. If only one person is putting in all the effort to keep the relationship alive, that’s a red flag you should take seriously, or you'll face a lot of conflict later.
This is the wake-up call a woman had after excitedly booking a room for her close friend’s wedding, only to have insane charges hit her card later. She soon realized the bride had taken advantage of her in the slyest way possible, which led her to question everything.
A good buddy always looks out for your best interests, while a bad friend just doesn’t seem to care
The poster shared that she had a friend, Tammy, from high school who had been mean to her, shared her secrets, and ruined another friendship of hers, but she was now nicer
The woman shared how she had to pay $500 to rent a hotel room for 2 nights to attend Tammy’s wedding, and that one day her friend asked if she would split the room with someone else
Tammy had told the poster she would take care of the hotel room charges, but ended up spending $1000 more from her friend’s card, which meant she couldn’t pay her school bills
When the poster confronted Tammy about the charges being added slyly, she shrugged it off and told her to email the other woman to recover the costs
The woman sent a stern voicemail to the other lady to try to get her money back, but eventually she had to ask Tammy to cover the costs instead
Later, Tammy told the poster that the other woman didn’t want to share a room anymore as she was uncomfortable, which made the poster not want to attend the wedding
Folks were shocked by Tammy’s behavior and said they would have immediately canceled plans if they were in the woman’s place
The poster made sure to get her card details removed from the hotel log and told her friend she didn’t like how everything went down and wouldn’t be attending her event
The woman had a big wake-up call about her friendship with Tammy and decided to at least apologize to the other woman for her tone in the voicemail
When it comes to friendship, it can be hard to recognize red flags in someone else, but Psych Central says it’s important to watch for key behaviors. One is when the individual has no regard for how their behavior affects other people, or when they consistently act in their own self-interest.
These people are comfortable keeping the relationship one-sided because it serves them, which is why they show no remorse if their buddy is hurt, sad, or feels taken advantage of. Eventually, the person facing the brunt of their entitlement might struggle to even be their friend any longer, and everything might fall apart.
Nobody should put up with a toxic person who doesn’t take their feelings into consideration
It can be painful to have a selfish friend, which is why experts advise that early on, folks shouldn’t take this behavior so personally. It’s important to understand that the self-centered individual might not change, so the best thing to do is give them less attention and set boundaries as soon as possible.
This can involve refusing to believe their lies, lending them money, or wasting your time doing their bidding. They will eventually realize their interests aren’t being served, and they might move on to someone else to manipulate. That’s when acceptance comes into play, because it can be hard to know when a friendship has run its course, especially if the bond is important.
In this case, the poster’s friend got her card details and charged her for another day’s stay at the hotel, as well as for someone else’s costs. You can prevent this kind of financial issue by keeping your bank and card details, and PIN numbers, safe and away from prying eyes.
Bankers explain that even if you trust your friends and family, you should keep your credit or debit card details confidential, as anyone could use this information for personal gain. Even if someone needs the details, changing your PIN or password after the transaction can help protect your money.
Anybody can misuse financial information, so it’s important to have as much security in place as possible
Professionals also advise setting transaction alerts and limits so that if any money is debited or credited, you’ll know immediately. This can help prevent scammers from stealing cash, as a quick alert lets the victim contact their bank, close their card immediately, and even trace the money.
Unfortunately, the woman realized too late that her friend had charged $1000 to her account, so she later had to follow up about the money, which led to a conflict with the bride. Unfortunately, it also made the poster not want to attend the wedding, and it possibly could have severely impacted their friendship.
Do you think the woman made the right decision by refusing to attend her close buddy’s big day? We’d love to hear your honest thoughts in the comments below.
