Is there anything more precious than your PASSPORT while travelling? No? If you want to keep it safe, make the copy of the document, laminate it and carry with you in a handy place. In the majority of cases the photocopy will be enough to satisfy the police, book an onward ticket or exchange money. Remember to put the original piece in the secure place like a hotel safe or a locker (provided that you've got a decent padlock).
