39 Strange Things That Happened On Planes And Left Everyone Wondering What Was Going On

Travel the world, meet all kinds of people. Growing up, I always thought those glamorous flight attendants must truly get to see it all. Turns out I wasn’t so wrong about this. Between the turbulence of rude and difficult passengers, the anxious antics of first-time flyers, and, of course, those chancers who think they’re above aviation rules, there really isn’t a dull moment. And they sure do see it all—the good, the bad, and even the downright disturbing.
That’s why, when flight attendants were asked about their weirdest and even scariest experiences at 30,000 feet, many were happy to oblige. Some passengers even chipped in with stories of their own. They range from hilarious to horrifying, and let’s just say there are even one or two that might have you looking at overhead compartments a little differently from now on.

A young child looking out a plane window, hinting at unhinged moments cabin crew sometimes face.
When I was 10 I got up to use the bathroom on the plane. Being my first flight ever, I just found the first door and followed the instructions to open it. I pulled for a few seconds before giving up and getting my dad. I walked him back to the emergency exit and told him the bathroom door wouldn't open. He froze for a second, grabbed my arm and ushered me to the obviously labelled restroom and never mentioned it again.

What I'm curious about is why all the other passengers around the door didn't question why I was vigorously jiggling the emergency exit handle at altitude, just slowly waiting for fate to work is magic.

And that makes some of the stories shared here all the more remarkable. Because while a bizarre moment at 30,000 feet might make for a memorable anecdote once you’re safely back on the ground, experiencing it while you’re responsible for an entire cabin is a whole other bag of chips—or maybe peanuts, in this case.

I'm not a flight attendant but this story involves one. I was on a flight back from Florida. FA taps me on the shoulder and asks if I would please move to the emergency exit. I say sure so she runs through how the door works and what I would need to do if need be. We taxi and take off she's in the jump seat facing me and were having some small talk. Suddenly at about 5k feet there is a loud bang and the door moves ever so slightly. Same thing happens at 10K and she looks visibly upset. She asks me what was that? I said I don't know but I'm not taking off this seatbelt, it stayed on the entire flight. I think I was more un-nerved by her reaction than the noise. She looked on the verge of tears. Not very exciting but there it is.

Also not a flight attendant, but heres my story.

Was flying through the midwest when traveling to look at colleges, and we were in the middle of drink service when we start to hit some unexpected turbulence. Its starts off as only a little rocking back and forth but seems to be getting worse. The flight attended has stopped walking down the aisle and is holding onto a seat to keep her balance when we must have hit a pocket of air as the plane dipped so suddenly she flew right up off the aisle, hit the roof of the plane, fell back down and ran full sprint down the aisle to her seat and strapped in. I will always remember the gasp among the passengers and then silence as everyone looked around wondering if this is how we go.

Aircraft Mechanic here, had to go out to a plane the other night that made an emergency landing diversion due to a medical emergency. I got up to the jet bridge as EMS wheeled a deceased passenger off of the aircraft. We ended up replacing most of the emergency medical equipment on the plane and sending them on their way.

I had a passenger who came back multiple times to the galley to chat. Nothing new, of course, people want to stretch or stave off some boredom. The thing was, the stuff this guy starting talking about weirded me out.

He once was in charge of holding the nuclear codes for the US military. His family owned Wyoming and sold it to the government. He hadn't been in the US for 16 years because the CIA was after him but he was returning because his father had passed but he had to be careful because his brother was out to get him. So much more but I wasn't writing it down. It was just weird and after a while, a bit unnerving. The guy was seriously intense...

Airplane interior with passengers seated and a cabin crew member standing in the aisle, ready to deal with various issues.
IANAFA: On the way to our honeymoon I puked on the last leg and dropped the bag. The stream rolled up and down between random people’s carryons as my partner and I scrambled to get paper towels from the bathrooms. FA and I didn’t say a word to the other people who were oblivious to this clear liquid rolling between their feet.

Airplane door with oxygen mask instructions, showing unhinged things cabin crew encounter.
A couple had a fight and then the guy got up to go to the bathroom and she followed fighting, but someone told me they were having intercourse, though I could hear them screaming and fighting.
Then my other flight attendant friend showed me this video on YouTube where someone does it, these ppl were imitating them.

(ps: we didn't disturb them, nevertheless it ended quick).

Cabin crew member wearing a mask assists an elderly female passenger on a plane, showing care in dealing with situations.
Yesterday on the flight my gf was working she saw an older lady cover her mouth and puke in her hands and it like shot out of the sides.

A cabin crew member in a red uniform stands in the galley of an airplane, ready to deal with passenger requests.
I was on a flight from Amsterdam. It’s a really long taxi to the runway so I was sitting at the back after securing the cabin. Sudden this woman jumps out of her seat and runs to the back door. I ask her if she was ok and she said she didn’t feel well and needed to get off the plane. I asked her to explain what was wrong, like if she had a headache or a stomach ache or something and she said she didn’t know. She was acting so strange and started to fake cry, she kicked the door and tried to open it twice, she didn’t believe the plane was moving so she couldn’t get straight off. We tried to talk her down and get her to go back to her seat, even her friend was trying to talk sense into her. We had to turn the plane around and go back to the terminal to let her off. We told her sit down while the plane was going back to the terminal but she didn’t want to leave the door so I had to block her from the door, she made some random phone call and covered her mouth while talking. It was all odd.

A man applying shaving cream to his face, a common grooming activity that cabin crew might deal with if requested.
Shaving. Good god the lavatory was just behind you.

Obligatory not a flight attendant, but I was on a plane to Holland in 2012. I was reading a book and minding my own business when I heard something to my right (I had the window seat). I saw this couple who had just sat down as at this time everyone was boarding the plane. Nothing unusual, right? Me being my nosey self continued staring at the new arrivals and after they sat down, the woman out her hands down the pants of the guy. You can only guess what they were doing... After a few minutes, they realised I was looking and stopped. It was a really awkward flight the rest of the way.

Relaying a story for a flight attendant friend of mine:

We see all sorts of stuff, typical customer service nonsense. I have plenty of stories of people thinking they're being subtle about touching themselves when everyone around knows what's happening. For me, though, the strangest one is when the gate supervisor came up the jetbridge and paged a passenger. The passenger hit is FA call button and we let him come up to the main door. The gate supervisor asked the passenger to describe his suitcase. Then the supervisor asked him what he had in his suitcase.

"Fish."

Apparently, this guy had packed a bunch of fish he caught into his suitcase. He managed to get it through check-in and even through the TSA screen, but after being bumped and tossed in handling, by the time it got to the plane it was wet and smelly and the baggage loaders refused to put it on the plane (thank God). The gate supervisor had to explain to this guy that everyone is going to be much happier if he gets off the plane and retrieves his suitcase, and even offered him rebooking and a voucher if he would come back without the fish. He deplaned and that's the last I heard of it.

It was extremely windy and the plane was shaking violently while we were landing. We were 30 seconds away aprox. from touching the ground. This young girl from the back decided this was the perfect moment to take a leak and walked, not to the nearer toilet on the back, but half way through the cabin on her way to the front toilet, around 20 rows away from her seat. We started shouting from our seats "SIT DOWN! ANYWHERE!". There was no time to call the captain and tell him to delay the landing. Instead of taking the closest seat available, she walked all the way back to hers and sat down just when we were touching the ground. Some people really want to pass away.

Also adults suck at opening toilet doors but kids know how to operate the hidden lock we use to lock and unlock the restrooms from the outside.

Not a flight attendant but last year my daughter and I flew from the North East U.S. to a Southern
U.S. city. As soon as we are airborne the passenger sitting in between us opens several brown paper bags all wrapped up with paper towels and begins loudly slurping in Buffalo Wings. The Wings were hot and steam was wafting about and my Daughter started to cough as both of our eyes were watering from the hot and spicy steam. The passengers next to our aisle were starting to cough as well. I myself love spicy food but this was over the top. Anyway another passenger asked a flight attendant if she could convince the women to eat after we landed. She did not take this well and complained
that everybody needs to eat, Etc. One week later guess who was on our return flight? Guess what snack she packed?

Not a flight attendant. But I once watched a fully grown man state that he couldn't hold it anymore right as the seatbelt sign turned on for landing and proceed to whip it out and pee in a water bottle in the middle of a plane descending for landing. The dude just showed his pp to everyone.

My mum from her time at Virgin:
Tonnes of people would get way to drunk on the way back from the US (mainly Vegas flights had this problem) some guy was to wasted and said he was too hot. You can guess where this is going... he wants to open the door, he gets restrained.

Says she forgets the rest, she wasn’t put off and just found it amusing! She wasn’t in that class that’s why it’s a foggy memory.

My friend was stuck on a plane with Guy Fieri when she worked for a regional airline. Horrifying.
