My journey to becoming a sculptor started on June 12, 2011. I had hit my alcoholic rock bottom, and was sure I had no future if I continued to drink. That date was my rebirth, if you will. I picked myself up, left the bottle behind, and started doing art. Any kind of art, just to keep myself busy. I painted pictures on my walls, made a 3 foot tall paper mache garden gnome, and painted a resin pig with wings. I discovered the ecstasy of creating. Literally. It felt like a drug.
One day I found some old Super Sculpey that I had in a box and made a mushroom. That was it. I knew I had found my new drug of choice. From then on, my only limitation was my own imagination. I had to learn the basics of course. I watched many how-to YouTube videos and started following sculptors like Emily Sculpts and Quequinox Art. I asked many questions and am sure I was a real pest lol.
Fast forward to today, 5 years later and I have slowly built my own business. I make my sculptures from Super Sculpey, (polymer clay) usually over wire and foil armatures. I hand paint them in acrylics and seal them with satin varnish. Sometimes I mount them on wooden bases and add decoration. Sometimes I sculpt right onto a bottle.
I have a future now. A bright one full of possibilities. Its been an incredible journey, and I'm just getting started! From an out of work alcoholic to a busy self employed sculptor. It has been a blessing.
