There are times when marriages don’t work out, often because of our own choices, mistakes, or circumstances beyond our control. Yet even when love fades or life takes unexpected turns, these relationships can leave behind memories that linger for years, small reminders of who we once were, the moments that shaped us, and the lessons we carry forward.

One woman shared how she married young and eventually divorced her ex-husband, their relationship ending amid heartbreak and personal struggles. For decades, she held onto a cherished keepsake, his great-grandmother’s wedding ring, as a quiet reminder of a life she once lived and the memories that shaped her. But when she learned of his daughter’s engagement, she decided it was time to return the ring, honoring its history and offering both herself and his family a moment of closure. Keep reading to discover how this heartfelt story unfolded.
Family heirlooms often hold deep sentimental value, which can make deciding who gets to keep them after a divorce particularly complicated

Marrying young lets couples grow together, learning each other’s habits and building a shared life from scratch
Getting married young can feel like stepping into a rom-com where everything just clicks. You meet someone, the sparks are instant, and suddenly forever doesn’t sound so scary. There’s something sweet about choosing your person early in life. You’re not just building a relationship; you’re building yourselves. You figure out adulthood side by side, learning each other’s quirks and habits in real time. Instead of fitting into someone else’s already-shaped world, you create one from scratch. It’s like assembling a future together, piece by piece.
Marrying young also means starting the “big life plans” at the same chapter. You’re both dreaming about careers, figuring out savings, wondering which city might eventually feel like home, and imagining what kind of life you want to build. There’s comfort in knowing you’re standing at the same starting line, neither rushing ahead nor trying to catch up. You can sit down over coffee and sketch out five-year plans that actually align, talking about promotions, side hustles, travel goals, or even when to buy your first place. Every milestone feels shared, and every success feels collective.
On the flip side, your early twenties are often a “figuring it out” phase. Dreams evolve, priorities shift, and even your definition of happiness can change. When two people start growing in completely different directions, love alone isn’t always strong enough to close the distance. Sometimes it’s subtle at first: new interests, shifting priorities, different ideas about what happiness looks like. Over time, those small changes can add up, and you realize you’re no longer walking side by side but on parallel paths that don’t quite meet. It doesn’t always mean someone failed or stopped caring. Often, it simply means you’ve both evolved into versions of yourselves that no longer fit together the way you once did. And that can be heartbreaking, not because the love wasn’t real, but because the people you’ve become need something different than the people you once were.
This idea also appears in Committed: A Memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert, a follow-up to her bestselling book Eat, Pray, Love. Gilbert reflects on how marrying young can mean committing to a shared future before fully discovering who you are as an individual. A partner who feels like the perfect match at 21 may not necessarily fit the person you become at 31. If both partners grow in entirely different directions, the relationship can begin to feel restrictive, creating a kind of marital claustrophobia as each person struggles to reconcile who they are now with the life they once chose together.
However, marrying too early can bring challenges, as limited experience and maturity may cause conflicts and misaligned goals
There’s also the reality of everyday life. Marriage isn’t just cute photos and shared playlists. It’s bills, laundry, stress, and tough conversations. If you haven’t had much experience handling conflict, even small disagreements can feel overwhelming. A minor misunderstanding about chores, money, or time together can quietly snowball into something much bigger. Add financial pressure, career uncertainty, or everyday stress into the mix, and those little cracks can widen fast. Without the emotional tools or communication skills to work through tough moments, frustration can turn into resentment before you even realize it. Over time, that constant friction wears a relationship down and makes it harder to reconnect. And sometimes, if those patterns aren’t addressed, the strain can eventually lead to separation.
Around the world, marriage timelines look very different. Take Colombia, for example, where the average age for first marriage is around 18. While much of the world is waiting longer, Colombia stands apart. For many couples there, marriage begins right as adulthood does. It’s woven into early life in a way that contrasts sharply with countries where people are marrying in their 30s. Cultural expectations and social rhythms shape these choices in powerful ways.
Meanwhile, across much of Europe, people are pressing pause. In countries like Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, and Portugal, the average age at first marriage is over 30. Many prioritize higher education, career growth, travel, and personal independence first. Marriage becomes a later milestone rather than an early one. It’s less about rushing and more about readiness, reflecting a broader shift in how commitment is viewed.
In other regions, the numbers are steadily climbing toward 30. In Russia, North Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, Croatia, and Montenegro, first marriages typically happen between 26 and 29. That’s noticeably later than previous generations. Education, financial stability, and changing social norms all play a role. Marriage isn’t disappearing; it’s simply being delayed as people redefine what preparation for lifelong commitment looks like.
Interestingly, later marriages aren’t limited to the late twenties. In the United States, first-time marriages between ages 40 and 59 have quadrupled between 1990 and 2019. More people are choosing to say “I do” after decades of life experience. Some focused on careers first, others found love later, and some simply waited for the right fit. The traditional timeline is no longer the only path.
In this particular case, marrying young didn’t work out for the couple. With time and maturity, however, the woman began to understand the heirloom's emotional significance. Her ex-husband’s great-grandmother’s ring wasn’t just jewelry—it carried legacy and history. She decided to return it, a gesture that reflected growth and respect. What are your thoughts on her decision? And do you believe people should wait a little longer before getting married, or is timing entirely personal?
After much deliberation, she shared how she ultimately decided to give the ring back
