Family conflicts can have long-lasting effects on a person’s mental health
The family feud is an old concept that keeps getting stranger over time. We hear so many stories about people pulling off the most bizarre things just to get what they want. Add inheritance to the mix, and it’s shocking to see what folks can do. Unfortunately, the world can be pretty unfair, and sometimes, people have to fight for what’s promised to them.
Legal experts say inheritance fights happen more often than we realize, and about 35% of families get caught up in them. They believe that many of these conflicts can be avoided with a clear estate plan. However, that might not always work, as we saw in the poster’s case. Situations can change at any time, and these conflicts can have a massive impact on the whole family.
Research emphasizes that chronic family conflict can lead to a range of emotional and mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and persistent stress. It also states that the ongoing tension and unresolved disputes create an environment where individuals may feel constantly on edge, overwhelmed, and emotionally exhausted.
This emotional strain not only affects personal well-being but can also reduce one’s ability to function effectively in daily life, the research adds. While these conflicts can be traumatizing, sometimes they also reveal a person’s true colors. For instance, in the author’s case, she realized what her father-in-law really thought about her non-verbal autistic son.
Well, he was still a kid, but it would devastate him to grow up and learn about his grandfather’s actions. A study by Autism Alliance UK indicates that public awareness of autism is riding high at over 99%. However, 91% of autistic people feel that society does not accept them or only sometimes accepts them.
The effect of stigma can be damaging for autistic people
The study also highlights that stigma and discrimination have persisted for these people, despite the increase in autism awareness. The effect of stigma is damaging for a wide range of groups, but for autistic people it is acute, and one of the biggest contributors to the unacceptably poor outcomes they face.
Realizing it came from his own family could be difficult for the poster’s son to digest. Moreover, the grandfather also went back on a promise he made to his own father just because of autism. However, a few netizens still felt that he shouldn’t have been kept in the dark about his wife’s affair.
Research found that an affair causes 20-40% of divorces. But it also shows that while the discovery of an affair may trigger a divorce, there were likely problems in the marriage before the affair. Also, the impact of discovering a partner’s infidelity can be absolutely devastating. Experts call it post-infidelity stress disorder, as it can cause symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and difficulty trusting others.
It’s hardly surprising that the man completely lost it and lashed out at his wife and the person he thought was his son. Netizens found the whole story extremely dramatic, and a few even suggested that it sounded fake. Some also commented that everyone in the story, except the autistic child, sounded horrible because of their scheming, misogynistic ideas, and discriminatory behavior.
