A recent study discovered that quarantine can have a huge effect on a person's mental health, resulting in a range of concerns from anxiety and anger to sleep disturbances, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In fact, earlier studies of quarantined patients of SARS, a previous coronavirus outbreak in 2003, also found that people under lockdown had suffered PTSD.
Recognizing the problem, the World Health Organization (WHO) released guidance on how people can protect their mental health during these difficult times.
“Be empathetic to all those who are affected, in and from any country”, the WHO highlights, warning against singling out anyone who has or had the virus. “The sudden and near-constant stream of news reports about an outbreak can cause anyone to feel worried”, said the WHO. “Get the facts; not the rumors and misinformation.”
