From concealing, disguising and protecting one’s self during battle, to adornment in ceremonial rituals. Throughout the world, masks have played a significant role in portraying the identity of a tribe, a community, a race, a nation. Evidently, the traditional Sri Lankan Mask is unique and is embedded in the Sri Lankan culture and heritage; with masks varying in make/material, design/detail, depiction and use.
This celebration of the Sri Lankan traditional mask with a fusion of pop art, achieves a contemporary interpretation and a cultural revival of the traditional arts and crafts of Sri Lanka.
This is an experiment by Sri Lankan pop Artist Charith Wijesundara, combining two art traditions of two eras to create a novel perspective of the traditional Sri Lankan mask, during this pandemic.
