As a photographer, I’m particularly interested in more abstract styles of art. I like to leave the room for interpretation and a personal experience. As an artist, I like when artwork takes me to distant places or memories, makes me think of specific people. So, I create photographs open to subjective viewing.
The photographs from the “Expose” series tend to work on psychological and emotional levels. Overlaying images expose mental states and raw human emotion. This body of work captures the essence of the moment, reveal interesting details and provoke reactions.
Double exposure photography in itself requires interpretation and involvement. Why are the two pictures shown together? Why are they intertwined? Why are they joined the way they are? I wanted to portray these people in a moment of emotion or sensation, show some aspects of their personality and bring these characteristics forward in my images. This body of work captures the essence of the moment, reveals interesting details and provokes reactions.
I as an artist bring my perceptions, experiences and memories to the work, but viewers play an important role in my artworks as well. It’s the viewers who will interpret the works from their prism of experiences. I won’t tell how to react to this work. I’ll leave it up to the viewer, because in my work, there is no right or wrong answer. I invite the viewers to be present in the photo, in that moment, encouraging them to experience, sometimes voyeuristically, the qualities of the personality. I strive to create an imaginary where we are all left to our own subjective experiences, where we can relax and let the feelings flow.
My hope is that viewers will let the photograph take them to familiar or imaginary places, to intimate memories, or let the photograph to speak on the language of bare senses. To captivate viewers with details, the images will be printed relatively large. Double exposure photographs are about you. You have to be inside of them or you’re missing out on the meaning.
