I am Janine Pendleton, and I am an explorer of the lost and forgotten world. I travel the world in search of amazing abandoned locations and photograph them to share with the world. There is so much beauty in these once-inhabited places which now lay overgrown and covered in dust.
In the summer of 2018, I embarked on a great Italian road trip. I live in England, where wet and dreary weather is a staple. The idea of spending the summer in northern Italy is the stuff of dreams to me. So I embarked on an epic road trip seeking sunshine and beautiful, elegant ruins.
I spent 10 days in Italy as part of a road trip that also included southern France as well as Belgium. I explored 37 amazing abandoned Italian locations. My poor camera was used and abused, capturing more than 500 photos during my trip. The road trip spanned over 2000 miles, covering the northern half of Italy. I zigzagged across northern Italy, scouring the countryside and cities for decayed beauty. My goal was to hit as many points on my route map as possible.
I explored numerous wonderful Italian villas, covering the entire range from crumbling ruins to pristine time capsules. I got my fill of industrial locations, filled with rusty machinery. I also explored the somber corridors of several “Manicomio”: Italian asylums which are relics of outdated attitudes to mental health treatment. I also explored churches, tramway stations, hotels, theatres, sanatoriums, and schools.
One of the most memorable explorations took place in the lonely corridors of an abandoned asylum. The sun was rapidly setting, and my exploration was a race against time as the light faded away. You can read that Bored Panda article by clicking here.
