Mom's Controversial Pool Net Safety Test Goes Viral, Expert Responds With Crucial Warnings

A mom's attempt to prove that her pool safety net could hold an adult's weight has sparked a heated online debate, with viewers questioning whether the viral demonstration really proves the net is safe for young children. While some praised Daisy Hipsher for testing the product herself, others warned that toddlers could interact with the net in very different ways and potentially become trapped or reach the water. Experts have since told Bored Panda what the demonstration does and doesn't prove about pool safety, while highlighting the warning signs parents should never overlook. daisyhipsher/Instagram Rather than simply showing the net from the poolside, the mom climbed onto it herself and walked toward the center to demonstrate its strength. At one point, she explained that she weighed 130 pounds, apparently using her own body weight to demonstrate how much pressure the net could withstand. “If I'm a small child and I'm reaching in right here, okay, I've reached in. I'm trying to get it and I can't,” Daisy said in the video. daisyhipsher/Instagram She then demonstrated what would happen if someone fell onto the net. “So if I happen to do a flip, my body is wet,” she explained. “When I lay down, my head is still above water, even if I lay it down.” She also tried to push a kitchen ladle through the mesh, apparently attempting to show viewers just how small the openings were. “Oh my gosh, I can't fit it through,” she said while struggling to push the object through the net. The demonstration appeared intended to reassure other parents that the product could act as an additional layer of protection rather than simply as a conventional pool cover. Daisy doubled down on that point in her caption, writing that she was confident the net would “100% keep a small child suspended” without their face being submerged. daisyhipsher/Instagram She also acknowledged that the net could sag enough for clothing and toes to become wet, but argued that a child's face would remain elevated. That claim, however, became the exact point at which viewers began to question. Some social media users argued that Daisy's demonstration failed to account for how a small child would behave after falling onto the mesh. daisyhipsher/Instagram “The net seems worse than nothing honestly,” one commenter wrote, arguing that a child could potentially fall onto it, become tangled and still get their face into the water. Another viewer added, “It's not about a kid falling in the hole, it's about them getting tangled and trapped in the netting.” “This net would only give kids the idea that they can walk on water,” one person commented, adding that a slatted automatic pool cover would be preferable. Others expressed, “The toddler will have a much tougher time getting out than getting in because weight would be working against them trying to get back through the net.” Many viewers raised concerns that an adult calmly crawling across a net is not necessarily the same as a toddler unexpectedly falling onto it. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of 376 children under 15 lose their lives in pool or spa-related incidents each year, with 81% of those incidents occurring in residential settings, including the homes of family, friends or neighbors. daisyhipsher/Instagram Toddlers and younger children are particularly vulnerable. Children under 5 account for nearly 80% of childhood pool drownings, while the National Drowning Prevention Alliance notes that roughly 70% of toddler drownings happen outside of designated swim time. A toddler slipping through a back door while a parent is cooking, doing chores, or briefly distracted can turn a routine afternoon into an emergency. Amid the discussion, Daisy posted a follow-up video with her young daughter, attempting to recreate what might happen if a child ended up lying face down across the net. She asked her daughter to lie flat and put her head down against the mesh. “Put your head on the net,” Daisy instructed. She then asked whether her daughter's mouth was touching the water. “No,” her daughter replied. Daisy continued testing the scenario, asking her daughter to look down and move farther across the net. Again, the child's face remained above the water while her clothing and feet became wet. “Your shirt is wet, but is your face wet?” the mother asked. “No?” her daughter responded. For Daisy, the demonstration appeared to reinforce the point she had made in her first video: even when the net sagged under weight, it could keep the child's face elevated. She later explained in the caption that she was deliberately testing situations she believed were more realistic than simply dropping a child into the middle of the pool. “REALISTICALLY the chances of a toddler getting to the middle is pretty slim. They are more likely to get hurt or caught in a hole closer to the edge,” Daisy wrote. “Ultimately I am happy with the net and feel confident in it. This is just an extra barrier and my kids are never allowed outside by the pool or open water without supervision, with or without the net on!!” Alissa Magrum Alissa Magrum, executive director of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA), discussed Daisy's case and highlighted the safety issues parents should watch for when deciding whether a swimming pool is safe. Rather than judging the viral video itself, Magrum pointed to the standard that a pool safety net should meet. “The most important thing is that the product (in this case, a pool safety net) must be designed and tested to meet the ASTM F1346-23,” she told Bored Panda, referring to the current ASTM standard for manual safety covers. Rawpixel.com/Adobe Stock (Not the actual photo) She emphasized that the product must also be installed according to the manufacturer's specifications. “If a pool safety net designed and tested to meet the ASTM F1346-23 and installed according to the product guidelines, they will be effective at keeping someone from accessing the water,” Magrum explained. But she was careful not to treat Daisy's demonstration as proof that every pool net, or every installation, is safe. anoushkatoronto/Adobe Stock (Not the actual photo) “The woman in the video did not access the water while walking on the safety net, but I cannot comment on the reality or efficacy of the video,” she said. Her larger warning was about relying on any one safety device. “Parents should not rely solely on a pool safety net (or any safety device) and should make sure to use multiple layers of protection.” That philosophy is consistent with NDPA's broader approach to drowning prevention, which emphasizes multiple layers rather than a single device. For Magrum, the answer is not simply choosing between a net and no net. Pixel-Shot/Adobe Stock (Not the actual photo) Instead, she urged parents to think in terms of five layers of protection: barriers and alarms, supervision, water competency, life jackets where appropriate, and emergency preparedness. A pool safety net belongs within that first layer, but it does not eliminate the need for the others. She specifically recommended four-sided isolation fencing, self-closing and self-latching gates, pool and door alarms, and active supervision. She also urged parents to start conversations about water safety “early and for all ages.” Irina Schmidt/Adobe Stock (Not the actual photo) Her three practical rules were similarly straightforward: use multiple barriers, start teaching children about water safety early, and establish strict pool rules and enforce them consistently. In other words, even a product that performs exactly as designed is not supposed to become a parent's only answer to drowning prevention. Even Katchakid, a popular U.S. company that makes pool safety nets, stops short of presenting its products as a guarantee against drowning. The company describes its pool nets as “supplementary pool safety aids” and says they are not a substitute for “undivided and competent supervision” by an adult. galitskaya/Adobe Stock (Not the actual photo) It also stresses that the net must be in good condition, properly positioned and tensioned, and warns pool owners to maintain sufficient clearance between the net and the water surface, particularly after rain. That caveat is significant because it mirrors the distinction experts are making about Daisy's demonstration: a net performing as designed is one thing; assuming it can replace every other layer of protection is another. Matthew Shafran, managing partner of the Weinstein Legal Team in Florida, approached the viral demonstration from a very different angle. How2ToGo He assessed the safety net from the perspective of what parents may assume about the product, and what could happen if those assumptions prove wrong. “The thing most parents don't understand is that they tend to think that the net is properly stretched out and that it will stop the child from accessing the water, but that is not true in reality,” Shafran told Bored Panda. “There are also openings in the net, and the child can easily go through one of those holes and get caught close to the boundary.” How2ToGo And Shafran believes an adult demonstration may not tell parents much about how a toddler would actually interact with the product. “Crossing over the net slowly as an adult is not a good test for what the average toddler does,” Shafran said. “Toddlers generally crawl and bounce and put their weight on the net in a way that an adult never would.” He emphasized that the distinction matters because the viral video shows that the net can bear an adult's weight, but that does not necessarily mean it is safe for a child. Marco/Adobe Stock (Not the actual photo) Shafran's concerns went beyond the mesh's physical properties. He argued that homeowners who treat the net as their primary protection could face greater liability if an accident occurs. “The layers of protection have to be applied one after the other, and the net used at the last stage,” he said. “The isolation fence, being a device without any gaps or holes for the child, would prevent the child from getting to the pool.” “Viral posts about pool nets convince parents that this piece of fabric is a guarantee of safety for their child, but that belief can lead to devastating consequences.” Przemyslaw Iciak/Adobe Stock (Not the actual photo) He explained, “Always prove that your safety equipment can do what it is supposed to do,” urging parents to photograph their protective barriers and gates periodically and keep a record of when the images were taken. Daisy's videos were meant to show what the net could do under pressure. The experts' warnings, meanwhile, focus on what can happen when parents begin treating that capability as a substitute for the other safeguards around a pool. A pool net can be one layer of protection, but those layers are designed to work together, not replace one another. globogym1969 usanewshq Su93rNova LitterboxComics ImSage05 Jaiathalien Shaughn_A2 Timewilltel1068 canitonik zup_dogs gopg8r Patrioloop mamab446373 Messia367558 _Ola104 DixieBecca Mirwais_karzai Dopamonfx AmyAimsss OBI_WAN_SH3N0B1
