It is spine-chilling to watch a complete stranger turn into an unhinged stalker before your very eyes. It is even scarier when they refuse to stop, no matter how much you try to protect yourself.
A man went viral after sharing how a Halloween-loving woman kept disturbing his grandpa. So, the young man stepped in and spoke with the neighbor. Things rapidly escalated from there into nightmare territory. Keep reading for the full story, including three terrifying updates.
Being stalked by a stranger is a nightmare made real
This man revealed how his grandpa's neighbor began behaving in extremely disturbing ways. He had no clue how bad things would get
It is imperative that you document everything your stalker does and report them to the authorities
Enjoying Halloween or liking the power trip you get when you spook people is no excuse for harassing someone, disturbing the peace, making life hell for your neighbors, and disregarding the law.
It is extremely unsettling to have a stranger keep making unwanted contact with you and your loved ones. It is even more terrifying when they intentionally start taking step after step to undermine your mental well-being. Living in constant fear and anxiety will wreck your health.
SPARC explains that every case is different. However, people who stalk can be very dangerous, as they can threaten or attack their victims. The consequences can be devastating.
The reality is that predicting what a stalker will do is difficult. No single psychological or behavioral profile exists for them. However, a stalker’s behavior can escalate from indirect ways of contacting you (like calling or texting) to direct contact (delivering gifts, showing up where you are, etc.).
“Many victims struggle with how to respond to their stalkers. Some victims try reasoning with their stalkers to placate them, hoping that ‘being nice’ will make it stop. Many victims minimize their experiences of being stalked, telling themselves ‘it’s not that bad.’ Still others may confront or threaten the stalker or try to ‘fight back,’” SPARC states.
Do not undermine your safety, well-being, and health. Trust your gut
Victims can’t control a stalker’s behavior. However, they can keep themselves and their loved ones safe. Always prioritize your safety. Never downplay a stalker’s behavior. Trust your gut. If you are in immediate danger, call the police!
You should document your contact with the stalker and keep a lot of police reports. Save all evidence whenever possible.
“Save all emails, text messages, photos, and postings on social networking sites as evidence of the stalking behavior. You may also want to consider how to use your technology and your devices in a safer manner.”
Reach out to your local victim service provider for assistance, and consider getting a protection, no-contact, or restraining order against your stalker.
According to SETDAB, some of the most distressing parts of being stalked are witnessing the small signs that the perpetrator leaves behind.
“It may be a turned over bin, a lit cigarette on the door step or a disturbance in the house, a sign that is left to intimidate or cause alarm.”
SETDAB notes that the average victim experiences 100 incidents of stalking before reporting it to the authorities. “Often victims feel their experiences are too insignificant to report or they fear they won’t be believed. If you are experiencing signs of stalking, please get the help and support available.”
