Unfair scrutiny follows Black Americans into their own neighborhoods
Racism against Black Americans is deep-seated, with historical roots stretching back to the 1600s and the trans-Atlantic trade. Centuries later, the bias and prejudice are very much alive — as constantly reflected in news reports, academic research, and everyday experiences.
A recent Gallup survey revealed that 64% of Americans believe racism against Black people remains widespread across the country. That sentiment is even stronger among non-Hispanic Black adults, with 83% expressing that anti-Black racism is quite common.
From casual suspicion in retail stores to unfair housing practices, racial bias manifests in ways both big and small. In residential spaces, this often takes the form of hyper-scrutiny, where ordinary routines — like walking home late at night — are suddenly treated with undue suspicion.
A study published in a journal of the American Psychological Association found that American racism systematically advantages White Americans while disadvantaging Americans of color. The authors highlighted that part of the reason for this inequality stems from the nation’s history of racial segregation, which physically and socially separated Black and White communities.
“Racism is a system of advantage based on race. It is a hierarchy. It is a pandemic. Racism is so deeply embedded within US minds and US society that it is virtually impossible to escape,” says researcher and Stanford psychologist Steven O. Roberts.
Why the effects of racial bias reach far beyond the moment
Living with constant discrimination can take a heavy, physical toll on the human body. Research shows that when someone deals with unfair treatment, subtle bias, or everyday hostility, their body stays on high alert.
Experts who studied brain scans and physiological markers found that this constant tension alters the brain areas that handle threat detection and social interactions. Over time, it triggers chronic inflammation, spikes stress hormones, and messes with heart rate regulation.
“When people are worried, day in and day out, about their safety, their future, and how they are being perceived by others because of racism, they experience stress and anxiety from recurrent humiliation. These effects are not transient, nor ‘merely’ psychological,” says Nina G. Jablonski, professor of Anthropology at Evan Pugh University, Penn State.
“The trauma of humiliation caused by racism creates recurrent stress in individuals, families and wider communities. These stresses manifest in manifold ways, and often transcend generations,” she adds.
Whether it happens through unfair treatment in daily life or deep inside institutions like offices and hospitals, racism directly harms people’s health.
Across the US, Black, Hispanic, and Native American people get sick much more often than White people. They deal with higher rates of serious health conditions like heart problems, diabetes, asthma, and high blood pressure. These health issues take a major toll over time — so much so that Black Americans, on average, live four years less than White Americans.

The problem was also clearly seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies found that when the virus hit, communities of color suffered the most. They faced far higher rates of hospital stays and fatalities. The pandemic did not create this problem… it simply exposed an unfair system — where income, environment, and healthcare access are unequally distributed along racial lines.
While individual strategies won't alone cure systemic bias, victims of racism can still take steps to protect their mental well-being.
The American Psychological Association notes that talking openly about racist encounters helps process the anger, shock, and isolation. Connecting with supportive communities, seeking therapy, and practicing self-care can also help reduce the physical toll of constant stress.
Still, no one should have to carry this heavy burden all by themselves.
