Preparing for a wedding can feel almost like preparing for battle — at least, your nervous system might think so. And it doesn’t help when everything you’ve been planning seems to go completely wrong.
That’s what happened to a woman who shared her story on r/tifu while planning her dream wedding. She thought she’d found the ideal photographer and even paid him, only to realize they weren’t a good fit after all. But the photographer wasn’t nearly as receptive to criticism as she’d expected, and here’s what happened next.
It takes a considerable amount of research to find the perfect wedding photographer for the big day
A couple realized their wedding photographer wasn't the right fit for them, and after parting ways and a Google review, the photographer completely lost it
Legal experts warn that a restraining order based on a single chance encounter wouldn't meet the statutory requirements for stalking
This story raises some major legal issues. For starters, the couple did nothing wrong by writing the review. In the United States, a federal law protects consumers’ right to post honest reviews about a business’s products, services, or conduct. It’s called the Consumer Review Fairness Act (CRFA).
Unfortunately, many business owners try to use threats of defamation or even breach-of-contract lawsuits to intimidate customers into taking down negative reviews, despite the CRFA's protections. However, anti-SLAPP laws can help protect people from lawsuits filed to silence them for speaking out. Depending on the state, these laws can provide a faster way to ask a judge to dismiss such a lawsuit.
There’s another legal issue at stake, too: restraining orders. Many readers advised the couple to seek one against the man right away. However, according to legal experts, a single chance encounter generally doesn’t meet the legal threshold for stalking, even if the encounter is aggressive. Stalking laws typically require a pattern of repeated, targeted behavior that makes someone fear for their safety.
The man likely saw the review as a reflection of his personal identity through an attack on his brand
From a psychological perspective, studies suggest that creative service providers may react with hostility to negative reviews or criticism because their brand is closely tied to their personal identity and livelihood. A single bad review can affect their search engine rankings and bookings, which might help explain why the situation escalated into a verbal altercation.
At the same time, the narrator mentioned that she had bad vibes about the photographer from the get-go. Psychologists explain that people can pick up on subtle cues, like micro-expressions and behavioral patterns, that may signal something is wrong, sometimes before they can consciously explain why. In this case, the woman may have noticed these red flags long before the altercation occurred.
For now, experts would likely recommend that the couple prioritize their safety. Rather than escalating the situation, keep a record of what happened, which the woman confirmed she has already done. This could help establish a timeline if anything else happens. But what would you do in this situation, Pandas? Would you focus on staying safe and documenting everything, or would you take immediate legal action? Let us know!
