More than 9,000 people on Instagram already follow this 81-year-old artist from St. Petersburg. The account @girl_from_1938 is cared for by a loving grandson, Yan Gorkunov.
The grandson asks his grandmother questions about life and talks about her creative path: Julia has no artistic education, but "for a truly creative person, this is not terrible because she sees the world as others do not see it."
In Julia's embroidery artworks, there are cats, dogs, and other animals as well as characters from famous canvases and even celebrities. She has already dedicated one of her works to the Spice Girls.
Julia was taught embroidery patterns by her grandmother. She didn't do it for a very long time, however, and only picked it up again five years ago. She does it all by hand without any professional art education. Her hands are full of energy despite being a venerable age.
It all began when her favorite country house burned to the ground. Unfortunately, her dog and cat were burned as well. No one knows how the fire started. She fell into a deep depression after this awful incident. Yet, she soon found a way to express her feelings and stress by making unique art. Now she has over 50 of these beautiful artworks.
Julia has dementia which often makes her confused and forget her relatives, places, and also things she did yesterday or an hour ago. Creating embroidery ideas makes her feel more comfortable, calm, and happy. When she's inspired by something, she forgets about the hurdles of mental illness. This is how art therapy works.
