Nadya Bonten-Slenders is a Dutch artist who has gathered an online following by creating wholesome illustrations of cute critters. Many times, the stars of her illustrations are rats, but other animals – such as cats, Guinea pigs, hamsters, penguins, and badgers - also make appearances in them. Nadya’s little works of art truly have a style of their own. They are usually popping with strong colors and draw from recurring themes. She also likes to work with aquarelle in her illustrations.
Nadya has had the ambition to create an illustrated children’s book starring rats for a few years now. In October 2017, she participated in the month long art challenge Inktober, creating an ink drawing every day. Drawing with ink resulted in a very simple but effective color palette. The stark black and white contrasted beautifully. Her experiences with Inktober cemented the medium that she would use for her book: ink. No more striking colors, from now on out it would be all about that beautiful contrast. Another technique that Nadya used was 3D-layering in her ink drawings, creating a certain depth to them.
Her book - that can be enjoyed by both children and adults - is near completion. Its magical story centers around two rats who travel towards each other using all kinds of whimsical forms of transportation. It is called Wanderlust – My Adventures To Where You Are. Her Kickstarter will be live during Inktober, which is only fitting since it’s been a year after her book idea became concrete enough to actually be brought to life.
