People are full of surprises. And not just good ones. Reddit user Large_Draft6126 asked everyone on that platform to describe the most disturbing things they've seen in "normal" people's homes.
Turns out, our neighbors, friends, and even relatives might have a dark side, too—some folks proudly hang pictures of despicable dictators above their fireplaces, while others keep actual skeletons almost as if they're house guests.
I guess you never really know someone until you see where and how they live.

Worked in the corrections system and with electronic ankle monitor bracelets. The prisoners who were considered low risk and had jobs and family. Where in a lot of messy homes. Was in a home for a woman in her 30s who had been drunk driving and had to do a 40 day sentence. Nothing weird or strange about her, friendly and had a job and a boyfriend.
In her bedroom she had littered the floor with rectal thermometers. They were all over the floor and in the bed, there must have been about a dozen of them. There were also several used condoms on the floor and on the bedside table as well had an assortment of various dildos. The bed was unmade and messy, the rest of the house was fine but dirty.
She didn't comment on them at all, didn't seem embarrassed or awkward about anything, and I didn't find it appropriate to talk about it either. I was just there to set up the ankle monitor and system and then be on my merry way. Always wondered what the purpose of all the rectal thermometers were though...

My daughter and I were helping an elderly woman in her ‘80s pack and move. We were invited into the Master closet (emphasis on master!). I saw things (“toys”) I’d never heard of nor seen. My daughter and I were trying not to wig out (I am NOT touching the hardware) and she is telling us all about her verrry active intimate life. I don’t need to see it much less hear about it. 👀👀 We still laugh about it.

Not disturbing, but interesting. I had a customer who I noticed was fairly right winged just by talking to him over the phone. He needed me to replace a window in his house. I set up an appointment time and met him at his house. He was single, drove a big jacked up pickup, wore a nice leather jacket, and seemed pretty masculine. The window I needed to measure was in his master bedroom. He leads me to the room, all while talking very casually, and when he opens the door, I step into a bright pink room with a bed that had bright purple sheets, and a decent sized dresser that was a lighter shade of purple. There were no wall decorations or pictures or anything. The trim and doors were pink. I first thought this was a little girl's room until he had mentioned he had no kids and his wife left him a few years ago. He made no attempt to explain the color scheme and I did not ask. I was there to do a job, not to judge a person on his color choices.
Like I said, not disturbing, just interesting.

About 40 years ago, a co-worker I was quite friendly with invited me to her house for a coffee and dessert.
I walked in and was stunned to see many framed, large photos of p**n on every wall in her living room.
Apparently, her husband was an amateur photographer. 🤮.

Hoarded out house, I needed a place to stay and I was given a bed with a bunch of dryer sheets on it. The pathway to the room was not cleared.

Two different things at two different houses. One was human teeth (he was a dentist), and the other was mummified cat that was flat (it had been run over) , she had it hanging on her wall as a decoration.

Not sure 'disturbing' is the word, but my wife's friend has a statue of the Blessed Virgin (about three feet tall) on a table in their dining room with a prayer kneeler in front of it. I'm told that's not uncommon, but I've never seen it and I grew up in a heavily Catholic town with almost exclusively Catholic friends.

When I was a student I was going to another university in another country to take part in a conference. It’s common to stay with a local that has volunteered to have you.
I was invited to the conference on my own so I was travelling with people I didn’t know and taken to peoples houses for meals and things which is nice but also, weird. This was in the US and one thing that was disturbing is they insisted we wear our shoes on their white carpets for one 😂
But the house I was dropped off at was a literal mansion. One retired professor lived in it. She was very nice but the house was creepy as f**k. My “wing” had a bedroom open to a sitting area bigger than most houses, and a it’s own bathroom. What was weird was that there was an attached room and I looked in there and it had like a 200 year old baby carriage, wheelchair, crib, sheets on furniture you name it.
Turns out she inherited the home from a long line of family members and they just never got rid of certain things but it was a little creepy.

Way back in the 80s I was in the National Honor Society at my high school. This was a small rural school with less than 100 kids in my graduating class. The teachers in charge of the Honor Society were a married couple who had been teachers at this school for a long time. One of the big events for us was the Honor Society tea. The teachers hosted the tea at their home and we were expected to dress well since its a formal function. So we get there all dolled up and we're hanging around drinking tea and eating pastries when one of my friends walks over to me and asks in a whisper if I've noticed the pictures. I asked what pictures he meant and he lead me over to a photo album on a little end table. Once I opened the photo album, I immediately wished I hadn't. Apparently our teachers were pretty big nudists and liked to take pictures at nudist activities. If you've ever heard that the types of people at nudist camps are not the ones you want to see n**e, that s**t is true as f**k. The male half of the teachers looked like a slightly less harry version of Sasquatch, only more round in the middle, slightly worse hygeine, and less attractive. The female half looked like the frumpy human wife of a Sasquatch.
Who the hell keeps their nudist scrapbook out when they know a bunch if high-school kids are going to be in heir home?
