The kids’ room is the place where you child will probably spend most of their time playing in, so it is important to decorate it in a way that will be play friendly, look good and be functional and fun at the same time. If your children are old enough, you should definitely consult them about what they would like their room to look like. Here are a few tips that will make decorating easier for you.
Be free with colours

The kids’ room needs to be lively and vibrant, so an abundance of colours is very welcome. You absolutely don’t need to stick to the stereotypes that blue is for boys and pink is for girls. Colours that are bright and create a lively atmosphere are orange, yellow, green and even white combined with some of these. You can be creative and do each wall in a different colour. Make sure you don’t create a monochrome room – let the furniture and carpet be in different colours that the walls, or at least a very different shade of the same colour. But generally, the more colourful the room is, the happier the vibe will be.

Comfortable furniture

Kids are not as careful as adults and all furniture in their room should be child-proof. That means you should avoid any pieces of furniture that contain glass or ceramics, something that can be easily broken. Also, avoid sharp edges or install protection. Their bed should be big enough and comfortable, there should be a soft carpet or a rug because kids play on the floor a lot. Getting a soft chair or some children cushions is also a good idea. A mini chalk board with little stools will fit in well too, as well as a desk.

Favourite toy friends and themes

Every child has a favourite cartoon character or an animal toy. We should respect their preferences and wishes when decorating the walls. Options are endless here, but just for example, you can paste wall sticker posters of their favourite Disney characters, animals, princesses, and so on. All sizes are available, even life-size graphics. You can also go for themes like sports, Star Wars, Jurassic World, Indiana Jones, or video games. You can put up a kids’ map of the world, animal world posters, or decorations like banners and hanging toys like airplanes and buzzing bees. Whole wall murals are also an option.

Provide a variety of toys

Scientific research has shown children need to play a variety of toys in order to develop in a holistic way. This means you should fill their room with different toys that are conducive to the development of different kinds of skills and abilities. For developing cognitive abilities, board games and memory games are great; for motor skills toys like small balls, squishies, marbles and toy cars are good; for creativity you should let the kids’ have some plaster, paint, colouring pens, arts and crafts supplies and so on. They will also learn how to organize and appreciate things by starting a toy collection for example. The best thing about this variety is that they will never get bored with playing the same games again and again.

Create a private corner

It is healthy for kids to develop a sense of privacy from early on: it will teach them how to be alone and how to respect their own space as well as the private space of others. This can be done in many ways, for example, setting up a tiny tent in a corner, occasionally setting up a tiny kids’ tree house adapted for the room, making an elevated bed in the shape of a pirate ship, setting up a spaceship captain’s console, or leaving a secret opening in a closet that leads to a secret corner. Kids love the sense of mystery and adventure.
Your options are endless, so let your creative juices flow and make your kids’ wishes and dreams come true, they will only be a kid for a short while and we promise you will enjoy the room as much as they do.
