While people are more aware about depression than ever, many might not really know what it actually means. It comes from a latin word "deprimere" which means to press down. It makes a lot of sense in the context of this mental illness, as people suffering from depression often describe it as a feeling of being weighed down.
The symptoms of depression are many, and it's often difficult to trace them back to the mental illness. Though having these symptoms doesn't explicitly mean that you have it, it might help you bring awareness. Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness and hopelessness are pretty standard with depression, and so are angry outbursts, irritability or frustration. But there are also a few sneaky symptoms like slowed thinking and speaking, or physical pain like headaches or back pain.
