Jonathan and Elizabeth met while studying at art school, where there were no classes on comics. Initially, they pursued different artistic paths: Elizabeth focused on illustration, while Jonathan created short films and documentaries.
According to the artists, the name War and Peas is based on a small illustration from their sketchbooks. "It was a carrot reading a book titled 'War and Peas.' We felt that this summed up our sense of humor."
When asked if they believe people still appreciate dark humor today, War and Peas responded, “We believe that there will always be a certain number of people who enjoy dark humor because it addresses pain in a way other forms of therapy can’t. Although we love the idea of millions of people laughing at our jokes, it’s all about ourselves and making each other laugh. That hasn’t really changed since our beginnings.”
"We think comics are an incredible medium to tell stories and some stories cannot be told differently. We're happy if people have a nice chuckle from our comics, but we also encourage people to make big life decisions based on our comics. It might be a comic character, but it could also be you!"
