There’s one country on Planet Earth that loves hamster butts more than anyone else—Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun! Hamster butts are a big deal there, with people going nuts for cute rodent behinds on social media.
This phenomenon is known as hamuketsu in Japan, a mix of the words ‘hamster’ and ‘ketsu’ (which means butt). Hamuketsu went viral on Japanese social media back in 2013, and it was the latest incarnation of liking things that are kawaii, aka cute.
Japan was so in love with hamsters that publishers saw an opportunity. For example, publisher Basilico released two books about hamster rumps in 2014.
“The great thing about hamuketsu is that it is delightfully cute. I can’t stop smiling when I see these butts,” Takeshi Takahashi, a spokesman for Basilico, shared his thoughts with the Wall Street Journal.

I’ve personally kept 5 hamsters as pets and my life is better for having done so. What I miss most about them is how cuddly and friendly they were. Not to mention the expressions they’d make when they’re happy or hungry. Or how they’d vacuum up sesame seeds if you left a trail for them.
Have you ever kept hamsters as pets, dear Pandas? What were their names and their favorite snacks?
