We're in the spookiest time of the year. It gets dark earlier, the weather is getting colder in most places, and the mornings are foggy and mysterious. We can practically smell hauntings in the air!
But unfortunately, not all scary experiences come from trying to get into the Halloween spirit. Some are very real and frightening, to the point where we just can't seem to forget them. So, we gathered a bunch of creepy stories from r/AskReddit, and honestly, you might want to turn on the lights before reading these!

My ex and I were renting an older small house built in the 1900’s. The back door had a vestibule where you could either enter the basement door or enter the back door to the house entering the dining room. This door was a window long window pane and we had a long stretch-curtain for the window.
My ex had some emotional issues and when we moved to this location things got much worse for her. One night, during one of her fits of screaming at me, we can began to hear a slamming sound coming from the vestibule. We get down on the floor and peer through the uncovered bottom window pane and see the door to the basement swinging open and slamming violently and without pattern. SLAM SLAM SLAM. We then heard and felt a VERY hard slam hit the floor as if someone took a sledgehammer to the ceiling below us. I get up and slowly open the door and the basement door opens once more and then ceases to move. I take a flashlight and head downstairs, which was a very old dirt floor, rock foundation basement.
I was very freaked out as I headed down the flight of stairs and expected someone to pop out. But they never did. No one was down there and it was very quiet. I head back upstairs and lock the doors. Nothing else happened that night and my ex and I split soon after. I stayed at that location for another year and after she left I felt much more comfortable.
I don’t know if I believe in the paranormal, but I can’t explain what happened that night and I can’t help but feel there was an energy reacting to my ex’s negative energy. I also want to add that I stayed at that house through hurricane force winds and that door never budged.

The way my office is set up, there are a bunch of desks you have to pass before you can reach my door. Even if you skip across them, it would take you al least 3 minutes before you are out the door. So I was working in my office one afternoon. Everyone else had left already, it was Friday afternoon. I heard, clear as day, three distinct knocks on my door. I immediately went to see who it was. There was nobody. The hairs on my arm stood up. I thought it was weird, but maybe I was tired, so I moved on. About two weeks later, the same thing happened. It still happens from time to time, I just ignore it and go on. I have been told not to acknowledge spirit activity, so I guess I'm sharing an office with a knocker ghost.

Not quite unexplainable, but definitely scary. I was in bed and my bed was right next to a window which I left open immaturely wide because I loved the breeze. I was facing the open window and I literally saw this black hairy creature with big eyes crawl in through the window but then stopped and made a hissing noise at me, I was terrified. I blinked as few times and it was actually a stray cat that saw the light of my open window and decided to try and get in. I never left my window open again.

As a young adult, I visited my mom in Tucson. She had me stay in the spare bedroom that basically had a bed, a sewing machine, a nightstand, and a walk-in closet.
Middle of the night I wake up with a wave of fear. I know there is something watching me from the closet. I can't look directly that way, but in my peripheral vision I know the closet door is open and just dark inside. Whatever was there was evil and did not like me there, or so I thought. It probably wasn't too many minutes that I decided to just go back to sleep since nothing was happening, but I remember thinking that it was silly to be so scared; reminded me of when I was a kid.
Next morning, wake up and mom's in the kitchen with her head buried in the crossword puzzle, coffee in one hand, cigarette in the other. I start to tell her the story of the "weird" thing that happened last night, and as the story continued she started to look up from her crossword, looked at me more intently, and her jaw started to drop.
She explained that a few weeks back when my brother came to visit her and stayed in the same room, he described the very same story that happened to him, including that he was embarrassed to have that kind of fear as an adult.
Just to add a little spice: the townhouse wasn't that old or anything, but it was built on the grounds of the former Tucson Tuberculosis Sanatorium.

I grew up in a small town, and lived out in the country. My mom and I were coming home from Walmart really late one night and decided to take the back way home. I still had my learners permit, so I wanted to take a road with less traffic. Anyone who has ever lived or been to the country knows how creepy these roads can be at night. I was going around a curve, right before a one lane bridge, so I slowed down in case I had to stop. Out of no where this woman jumps in front of me to the drivers side of my car and starts pounding on the hood of my car. Her mouth was moving but I couldn't make out what she was saying. My mom started f***king out and told me not to stop, and just keep driving. I kept going and we both looked back to see where she was and no one was there. To this day my mom and I still remember it clearly. Turns out there's apparently a legend about a woman who d**d around the bridge and supposedly can be seen sometimes late at night. I get goosebumps to this day just thinking about it.

When I was 15 I was walking home in the dark from the train station around 10pm at night. It was a narrow one-side road for pedestrians (other side was the railway) and there was very few street lights to give vision. As I was walking down this long stretch, I noticed a ghastly white figure in the distance, like a blurry white spot all the way on the other end of this long-winded road. Because the street was completely straight I could see it relatively clearly. As I got closer my fight or flight response started kicking in and I wasn't sure if I should turn back or, being the level-headed person/non-believer of supernatural things person I normally am, soldier on.
As I got closer I realised it was a woman that was almost completely wearing white clothing. I thought that's odd and just accelerated my walking speed in the hopes I would get past her quicker. As I got very close towards her I realised that the lady was wearing a full wedding gown including a full blown veil. I could hardly see her face through the blurriness of the veil and the darkness of the night. At this point my heart was practically jumping out of my chest and my brain was struggling to come to grips of what I was really seeing. I also noticed that there was something very odd about the way the lady was moving. It was at this stage I realised it looked like she was FLOATING/sliding across the floor. I couldn't see her legs either due to the dress.
Now you might think this is where it ends but there's more. After I finally walked past her (a moment which seemed like to last forever), I accelerated my speed to jogging speed and did not/was too scared to look back. After I had passed about 4-5 houses, out of curiousity/fear that she was stalking me somehow I looked back, she was GONE! After seeing her disappear I ran to the nearest cross-street and have not gone back down that street to this day.
Now keep in mind there was no side streets down this road and the other side was a railway track. Sure she may have gone into one of those houses but what are the chances? And why on earth was she wearing a full blown wedding gown in the dark of the night? These questions still plague me to this day.
Edit: one thing I forgot to mention, she was tall as f**k as well. She towered over me when I walked past (must have been well over 6 feet tall).

Finally! I have a story!
So my family moved to a house in a small town in Kansas in 2002, I was 10 and my brother is 2 years older. I didn't like it from the start, it weirded me out, I told my mom I thought it was haunted. Our bedrooms were upstairs and the piano that I hated was down stairs to the left of the stairs in the dining room past the kitchen. My brother liked to s***w with me by playing the piano then hiding. He usually did it at night to s***w with me before bed, which gave me really bad nightmares and made it difficult for me to sleep without a light on. So my mom years after admits to me she had several experiences with doors slamming and cabinets being open when we weren't home.
So my brother and I were playing Mario Kart 64, actually getting along for once when I hear the piano again. So I told my brother "Real funny, you got one of your friends to come over and play the piano to s***w with me." He looks at me really scared, and says "I thought you were doing the same thing." So we stop our game and my brother grabs a bat and tells me to follow him, I grab my bb g*n and we slowly go down the stairs. When we get to the bottom stair the music stops. It's d**d silent in the house, no Windows open, no AC going. You can hear the faint sounds of Mario Kart in the background. So my brother just freezes in place. So young me says "I don't know who you are, but I've got a loaded g*n. So you better leave." When we get down to the bottom of the stairs we turn left to the kitchen. All the cabinets, fridge and freezer door are wide open. The Piano key cover is open and the doors were all still locked. So we freak out and my brother calls our mom and tells her what's going on. She calms us down and says she's coming home. So we start to close the cabinets, and I go to the stairs and look up at the door. That door slams so hard it knocks a picture of me off the wall and breaks the glass. I freak out, sh**t my bb g*n (yes I still had it) at the door and run away screaming. My brother freaks out and runs out the other door and we are both sitting in the front yard when my mom gets home. We explain everything and we go to my dad's house that night and we end up staying the week. My mom moved us out that week, she said she had several experiences similar to that and doesn't feel safe there.
Several years later the land lord was found in the basement d**d, he sh*t himself in the stomach with a s*****n. I'm not going to say I believe in ghost or it was haunted, but I don't know what it was that day and I don't want to know to be honest. I couldn't sleep with the lights off until I was 16.

I was a caretaker of a small uninhabited island off the coast of Maine and my girlfriend and I started having synchronized nightmares about things that we had never discussed before. They involved very specific themes and after month of this happening we were gifted a history book of the island that had a small chapter in the back that mentioned the exact hauntings.

In highschool, woke up in the middle of the night and opened my eyes to see a guy that I'd never seen before standing over me. I remember he had a flannelette shirt on. He was staring down at me, I threw the covers over my head and had my heart beating as fast as it ever has. After a bit I pulled down the covers and the guy was gone.
I still remember it quite clearly, I don't usually subscribe to paranormal experiences but that s**t was no dream. I saw him clear as possible standing right next to my bed; looking down, not moving or making a sound.

Sleep paralysis has always brought me the most fear in my life. My grandma's house in particular always seemed to cause my episodes. One time when I was younger, I was spending the night at my grandparent's house and my grandma was trying to calm me. I was afraid of sleeping in the living room alone. I always felt a bad energy in that house, and a lot of it had to do with my episodes. She tells me to "fear no one but God", and tucks me into bed.
As I am falling asleep, I feel the familiar wave of paralyzation come over me. I shut my eyes tight, knowing the hallucinations were coming. I could hear a tape recorder noise out loud, almost like a tape rewinding. Suddenly I hear grandma's voice saying "Fear no one but God". As I open my eyes, I see a floating white figure above me. The best I can describe it is it was almost taking the form of a woman. I eventually snapped out of the paralysis and cried.

I was maybe 13. I was staying at my cousin's house during a weekend and one night I had a really vivid dream. In that dream I woke up in the middle of the night and for some reason walked out of our room. I remember it was really vivid like it wasn't a dream but something just felt off. It was way too silent and really eerie. I opened the door, and there was like a hundred white snakes on the floor bunched up together and slithering around. There's a single snake sticking out from the middle of the pile and it has red eyes and it stood there really still staring at me. I froze in front of the door just staring back at it for a few minutes before I woke up for real. It was the feel of the whole thing that creeped me out. But I thought it was a just a stupid nightmare and didn't tell anyone and kinda forgot about it.
Well a few weeks later I was back at my cousin's and we were just talking with her superstitious housekeeper when she told us that she believed a guardian spirit in the shape of a white snake with red eyes is protecting the house and that it has visited her in a dream. My cousin laughed it off but I was spooked. She told us about her dream and it's the exact same dream. I didn't tell anyone about my dream. What are the chances of us having the exact same dream? I don't believe in ghosts or guardian spirits but this still freaks me out when i think about it. I never stayed in that house again.
100% happened.

Does a thing happening every day for 13 years count? If so, my childhood home had some supernatural s**t goin on. You would always hear the conversation of a man and woman, but couldn't figure out their words. My room was where it could be heard the most. My room was also the room where a guy shoved his daughter out of the window about a century ago.
There's sooo many more things about that house that are creepy, but the conversations are what stuck with me most.

I was 13 and just moved to another school. I'm terryfied of new people so talking to them was really hard and all I wanted was a friend.
I had those dreams about a guy older than me, he looked familiar and reminded me of my sister. We were talking and playing together.
In my last dream about him he asked me if I want to be with him forever and I said yes. We started walking through a dark maze, walking was becoming harder and harder with every step.
Finally I saw the light at the end of it and heard whisperes telling me it's not my time yet and I have to go back but I continued to follow him. The whisperes got louder and louder and thousands of hands came out of the walls of the maze and started dragging me away, I tried to fight but I couldn't.
Finally I got so scared I ran out of the maze and when I got out I've heard him screaming "why did you leave me?". I woke up with an asthma attack.
After a few months I learned that my mum had a misscarriage before I was born so I think it was my brother.

I shared this elsewhere already today but it's perfect for here-
My partner and I were driving down a steep hill in my city, myself in the passenger seat. Traffic was fairly busy as usual as it was only ahout 8pm and the road is one of the main routes for commuting out of the city. I'm just kinda enjoying the journey as the car was nice and warm and I was looking forward to dinner when I got home. I noticed out of the front window and to the right that somebody was about to walk in front of oncoming traffic. I panicked and shouted out loud to my partner that someone was about to get hit and potentially thrown into our path. But at the moment they were about to be hit by a small white van, their top half disappeared but their legs were still walking into the road. It is the most bizarre thing I've ever seen in my 32 years alive. The legs took a few steps forward, they weren't solid as I could see the vehicles head lights through them, yet they weren't completely transparent. So strange. I had consumed no alcohol, no d***s, not even a paracetamol and I wasn't tired or stressed either. Still to this day I won't go on that stretch of road!

I will add something here that happened during halloween when I was a teen.
Me and my aunt used to throw a massive halloween party every year. We would rent this building by a cemetery (for creepy factor) near our home. The last year we did it there, we had been up at the building decorating for 2 days and it was about 3 in the morning.
We had set up this owl by the front door that would hoot when someone walked by, so it was motion activated. We locked up the front door and went to close up the back as we were done for the night.
There was a stage in this building that we would put the curtains up and make it a mad scientists lab up there. We were way into halloween if you can't tell.
My aunt and I went up on the stage to turn everything off. All of the sudden, we hear the front door that we just locked open up and the owl makes the hoot sound. We were behind the curtain and couldn't see what it was. We stood there froze in fear and staring wide eyed at each other, not sure who just walked in.
All of the sudden, a massive gust of wind blew the curtains towards us. I have never been so terrified in my life. I was sure we were going to d*e. All of the danger flags were going off.
It got quiet for a while. We finally braved it out and came down the stairs to peak out and see if anyone was there. There was no one. The front door was shut and still locked. Nope! We got out of there so f*****g fast. We didn't book the party there again after that. It was so scary.

For 18 years of my life I stayed in the same childhood home without moving, and slept in the exact same room. Over the years, strange things happened in this room - from your typical “items falling off shelves.” Down to sightings of figures swinging from nooses.
The scariest thing to happen to me, was when I turned 18. I suffered from clinical depression and insomnia which left me in a pretty bad shape for years, so perhaps take this story with a pinch of salt, though now that I’ve left that home - my miraculous recovery from both suggested that my issues stemmed from something outside of my own control.
My bed was small, and had no “underneath.” As it was a wardrobe-bed combo with the drawers you can pull out. A few days after I turned 18, I had gone to bed at about 3am - early for me.
I decided to call my significant other (now fiancé) and sleep on the call for the night, because I had this uneasy feeling. The room was unusually cold and bitter. I had left the window open.
(I can’t sleep when it’s too hot.)
I was just about to fall asleep when something in my head set off, you know that typical “something is seriously wrong.” Kind or feeling? I heard this loud growl. And rustling from the bottom of the bed. However I didn’t have time to react, when these hands had grabbed my right leg and yanked me out of the bed and dragged me half way across the floor. I screamed, freaking out my S/O, who started shouting my name down the phone.
By the time I could fully comprehend what had happened, whatever pulled me out of my bed had vanished. But, what was left behind was a large, deep gash in my stomach.
I was rushed to hospital and admitted into the psych ward for 5 days, for s*******m.
I’m convinced it wasn’t me.
That’s not even the creepiest part.
When I returned to my room, I found several marks around the room.
The most notable, were scratch marks in the curtains, and along the windowsill- leading outside and onto the roof.
I’m far away from that place now. It’s for the better. But the experience drove me into a career focused on psychology, cultism, and supernatural experiences.
TLDR: I was dragged from my own bed and had my stomach slashed. I was accused of s*******m, but the damage to my windows told a different story.

Pretty sure I had people living in the attic AND under the house I rented with some friends. The place was an old house turned into a duplex. The house was about 4 feet off the ground and surrounded by bricks except for a maintenance access door. You could pretty much get in and out without anyone noticing because the door was off to the side of the building.
The time the owner had to do work on the property he had to get under the building and found coolers, shoes, blankets, glass bottles, and so on.
The only reason we found out about the attic is because we didn’t know our outside storage closet ceilings could be pushed up on and lead into the attic.
Many of a strange things happened at that house. I felt like it was the Twilight Zone.

When I was 5/6 I had an invisible friend. Her name was Jen, she had curly brown hair, blue eyes, and I thought of her as my older sister. I thought she was pretty cool because I really wanted an older sister.
One day I mentioned her to my mom, who freaked out and told me never to talk about Jen ever again. It honestly scared me. Jen stayed around for awhile, but sort of faded after a while.
It was a couple years later when I was told that before I was born, my mom had a miscarriage pretty late in pregnancy. The fetus was a girl, and would have been named Jennifer.
It's totally possible I was told/overheard about the miscarriage way earlier and just don't consciously remember, but still.
