After 3 weeks of cultural isolation, there's finally an exhibition opening again, and it opens all over the world at the same time. Belgian visual artist Schellekens gathered 33 Belgium based artists to make a great exhibition with works concerning these lockdown times. The virtual exhibition 'In the absence of the artist' will be open for 3 weeks and can be experienced on this website : www.dirkschellekens.com/in-the-absence-of-the-artist

In bad need of some contemporary art? From now on you can breathe in some fine contemporary art of more than 30 Belgium based artists in a virtual museum. This lockdown exhibition is an initiative of Belgian visual artist Schellekens and is meant to relieve these special times, Each artist was given carte banche to choose an artwork which relates to the times we are all over the world living in.
Many older artworks got a whole different feeling and meaning nowadays, like the handcarved painting 'How To Avoid Everything' (2017) from Lieven Segers. Hans Op de Beeck chose 'Celebration', a video in which everything is ready for the festivities to begin, yet somehow they never do. The camera angle remains fixed throughout, recalling the simple recording techniques of early cinema. Despite the diversion provided by the liminal action – the fluttering cloth covering the banqueting table - the passage of time is palpable, felt as a density, always in the expectation that something might happen.
Also 'Boy in sleeping room' (2020) by upcoming artist Felix De Clercq which he made shortly before the coronacrisis, gets a whole different meaning.
Partcipating artists: Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Ruben Bellinkx, Nadia Naveau, Nick Andrews, Hans Op de Beeck, Koen Vanmechelen, Yves Velter, Fred Eerdekens, Felix Declercq, Wesley Meuris, Karin Hanssen, Karel Burssens, Amber Andrews, Chris Gillis, Pieter Jennes, Lieven Segers, Reniere en Depla, Lisa Vantorre, Nienke Baeckelandt, Senne Roekens, Ellen Vrijsen, Idris Sevenans, Rufus Michielsen, Schscht, Kris Van Dessel, Goele De Bruyn, Zena Van den Block, Jonas Vansteenkiste, Katleen Vinck, Schellekens
