Simply speaking, your body has four main ways of reacting to stressful and dangerous situations. These are:
- Fight
- Flight
- Freeze
- Fawn
Your body instinctively does what it thinks is the best strategy to ensure your survival.

For example, your body enters fight mode when there’s a good chance that you can overpower the threat you face.
On the flip side, it will enter the flight mode stress response if the threat seems like something you can outrun.
If those two approaches aren’t good options, you might find yourself freezing up.
Or you might enter fawn mode, where you try to minimize the danger by being overly helpful and agreeable toward the threat, trying to make them happy.

Well-functioning stress responses keep you safe. However, if you’re constantly in a state of h**h alert and stress when there’s no tangible danger, it becomes a serious problem, damaging your health over a long enough time frame.
The Cleveland Clinic warns that frequent, chronic, and disproportionate stress responses can be detrimental to your physical and mental health.
Harvard Health also states that repeated activation of the stress response wears down the body and mind. It leads to h**h blood pressure and contributes to anxiety and depression.
