Bored Panda reached out to Emi, the creator behind the comics, to learn more about her and her long-distance partner.
“I'm Emi, a hobby artist from Germany in my early 20s. Drawing has always been my favorite free-time activity since I was a teenager. In late 2015, Bry and I met on social media—Google+, to be exact. We became friends and noticed that we had a lot of interests in common. It fascinated both of us since we were basically from other parts of the world. I'm from Germany, and he is from Mexico. We started catching feelings for each other and later started dating. Together, we built a strong bond of trust over the years. Currently, we just see where this long-distance relationship takes us,” shared Emi.
We were wondering what inspired Emi to start creating these comics. She shared: “There are two major reasons why I started making those comics. Me and my boyfriend used to surprise each other with little doodles from time to time. That was the moment when I started drawing each other as simplified characters in different scenarios. It was super fun!
And my main inspiration was that, in the years prior, I've always enjoyed checking out other people's art online. I've discovered couple of comics by big creators and have grown to love seeing them on my feed. Very few people posted illustrations about being in a long-distance relationship. Those stuck with me the most. They made me realize that I'm not alone. It felt very special every time. This ended up motivating me so much that I started uploading my own illustrations around 2019.”
Long-distance dating can be really challenging, so we asked Emi how her comic helped her personally to deal with difficult situations related to their relationship.
“The illustrations help me process the experiences we've been through. It's a great way to express all sorts of feelings and emotions. Every relationship out there has a unique story. As a rather introverted person, it helps me to tell our stories and impressions in a creative way,” wrote Emi.
Emi also shared what comes in her way the most when making comics.
“The biggest challenge for me is managing my time during the process of creating another artwork. I have a full-time job, and sometimes I have less time to draw than expected. Other times, I feel too tired at the end of the day. Despite everything, I'm always full of new ideas,” explained Emi.
This is what Emi would like for people to take away from her comics: “It lights up my day when other couples feel understood. Some have told me that they even see themselves in the artworks and can relate a lot. So many share their optimism in the comments. I simply want to continue inspiring others, make them smile, and share advice.”
And lastly, Emi wrote: “I wish all readers a great rest of the day. If any long-distance couple is reading this - it's worth waiting if two hearts belong together. Stay strong and patient!”
