What are Puns?
So we all have read them, shared them in a moment of togetherness, and groaned when someone made a lousy pun. However, we still might not know what exactly puns are. To get a clear answer, we’ve trusted the good ole Oxford Dictionary, and this is the explanation we found about puns in it:
A pun is a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings.
To simplify it, a cookie pun, or any other silly pun for that matter, is a simple wordplay where a word gets a new meaning purely because of its similar spelling. Here are the most common types of puns:
- Homophonic puns. These are the puns that rely on words that sound the same but have different meanings. Like most of the baking jokes on our list!
- Heterographic puns. These puns play with words that are spelled differently but pronounced the same.
- Homographic puns. In this case, the pun relies on words that are spelled the same but have different meanings and, at times, even different pronunciations.
- Recursive puns. These quips involve wordplay within wordplay, creating a chain of puns. Think something along the lines of “I’m reading a book on anti-gravity. It’s impossible to put down.”
While these four types of puns are the most prominent ones, there are many more types of them, like Visual puns, Parapradoskian puns, Spoonerism, and Mondegreen. But, to explain them all would take up all the length of this article! And, after all, we’re here to enjoy some cookie jokes, right?

How to Make Puns?
Creating puns is all about playing with words and their meanings to produce humor or clever connections. To make a pun, start by identifying a setup and punchline – introduce a word or phrase with one meaning in the setup and provide an unexpected twist or interpretation in the punchline.
Context is crucial; consider the subject you're discussing! Puns often work best when they relate to the topic at hand. Utilize homophones (words that sound the same but mean different things) or word order changes to create humorous associations.
Don't be afraid to experiment and practice, as puns improve with time and creativity. Also, reading funny puns, just like these Oreo puns on our list, might help you, too!

Are Puns the Lowest Form of Humor?
The idea that cookie puns might be “the lowest form of humor” is absolutely a matter of opinion and preferences in humor. And although some terrible puns do make you groan, keep in mind that that is a natural bodily reaction to a joke that’s so good we feel jealous we didn’t come up with it first! Well, that’s what we think, anyway.
Be as it may, humor is a highly subjective thing, and there’s no clear hierarchy between “low” and “high” puns. It’s true that some silly puns might be a bit more light-hearted, while others, like these cookie puns, might be a bit more sophisticated, but they’re all ultimately highly enjoyable and entertaining.
So, why not entertain ourselves a bit longer by scrolling through this delicious list of baking jokes and cookie puns?
