I worked at sams club and was stationed at the self checkout. A woman and her friend ( both black women)came through and tried to pay with her ebt card, but it kept getting declined. I tried to help her out but there isn't really anything I can do for her. I asked her if maybe her balance was less than the total. I asked if she wanted to call and check her balance so she could split the payment or remove some items. She got upset with me and left. But not before complaining to my manager ( who also happened to be a black woman) that I was racist and looked down on people who use food stamps. I was shocked. I mean I was on food stamps myself and even if i wasnt i wouldnt judge anyone for needing assistance, especially with the prices being so high. My manager didn't take it seriously thank goodness. She knew me and knew it was nonsense.

I can relate. My daughter is autistic and only used one word demands to get what she needed. After years of ABA therapy and special needs focused education, we had gone to target and there was a big picture of a rooster over the deli counter. Out of nowhere she said " look mom, a chicken". I stood there is shock, looking around to see if anyone else had heard it. Of course no one batted an eye as most 7 year Olds could easily say this by now. But I stood there crying big fat tears and texting and calling everyone I could think of to share this with them.
