This is not uncommon. My wife grew up in a very urban area and had either a mail slot or a box attached to her house her entire life. I, on the other hand, grew up in a more rural area and we had streetside mailboxes with the flag. When we moved into our first house in the suburbs, I had to explain to her that the flag was to notify the letter carrier that there was outgoing mail in the box.
