Not a selfie like our present day ones, I guess? More that you would push the button on the camera to take a picture x seconds later?
I don't know if this is as paradoxal/hypocritical as it seems at first glance - he may have been fully committed to trying to keep young boys away from the life he led and was likely unable to leave.
