That is the crux of the problem. I agree that it really s***s for wait staff who are underpaid, but the fact of the matter is that the burden of subsidising a restaurant's poor pay practices does not fall on the customer. I understand that the US service industry is unfortunately entrenched in this system, and if I ever visit the US, I'll follow the local tipping customs out of respect. But that doesn't change my view that leaving no tip is a perfectly valid choice. A tip is something that's freely given, not something that's owed. If a customer doesn't leave a tip, I can of course understand why their server would be frustrated. But that frustration should be directed at the employer and the system that normalises paying staff so little, not at the customer for declining to subsidise it. And I do not believe that not paying someone extra money is punishment.

I have to disagree with you on this. Wait staff do not even make minimum wage. This is because it is assumed that they will be paid tips by customers. If you don’t like the way the law is, then the solution is to change the law. But withholding a tip is just punishing the lowest person on the ladder.

You are on the way up again, safe and caring for each other. Be happy ❤️🩹

I’m 62. When I was a teenager mine was orange, purple red and blue (not all at once). I was one of the tamer ones.

I've been the bigoted idiot once who judged based on the appearance of a person before! A very made up girl (long colourful nails, a lot of make up, fake eyelashes) was waiting at the same bus stop as me and I remember thinking that it was all very impractical, judging her for her "vanity" and thinking that she would look much better without (not proud of that one!). Well, when a bus arrived and a woman with a pram arrived, she was the only one who moved to help her. Not the man in his fancy suit, not the judgy a-hole that I am (or hopefully was), not the teenagers waiting nearby. Just her. It did teach me a lesson.

Mom absolutely knew where that $20 came from. That doesn't make the story any less sweet. In all likelihood, neither of them will ever mention it.

Witnessed a cousin of my ex husband pour a bottle of methylated spirit (about 100 ml) into a bottle of Irn Bru. He was in a bad way, alcoholism ruined that family- including my ex.

That can't be meant serious.
