I betcha that all of these young men were drafted and many ended up in Vietnam, where they were shoulder to shoulder with other young men, whose skin was darker than theirs. I doubt there's anything more efficacious for building bonds beween men than being under fire together and depending on the other guy to keep you alive, as you know that he depends on you.
