Reminds me of my situation last year after my husband died. He had always helped out a sister financially and cared about her more than other siblings. Once upon a time we looked at buying a small house she could "rent" from us, but decided it was beyond our means. He also loaned her his car a couple of times to take long trip in, because her car was not good for that. After he died I contantly heard "he wanted me to have a save place to live" and "he wanted me to have a better car" that became "you must be lonely living alone" & "what will you do with an extra car in your way". Eventually it was "I want dibs on the car but I can't afford to pay you for it" and "I'm getting a place rent free but I want to live closer to you". I am now mostly NC, and that's okay.

I don't have kids. My nextdoor neighbor has 3 rambunctious boys. Their driveway is right outside my bedroom window. These boys laugh, shout, bang toys, etc. every day - never before 10am, never after 8pm. And I am happy to hear their laughter. Yes, sometimes I am reading a book in my room, and it can be distracting. And that's okay too.

My MIL didn't want to come to our wedding the morning of because she was too hung over (she decided at the rehearsal dinner to start drinking for the first time ever). One of her daughter's forced her and she looks like a zombie in all the photos. FIL knew my photographer, and got him to spend much of the time he was supposed to be taking random casual shots doing portraits of his family, none of which included me or his son. I didn't find out about it until I got the proofs...from FIL! FIL had taked photographer into dropping them off to him first at the family business, where all the siblings wronte on the back of them what they wanted prints of WITH A GREASE PENCIL and then stacked them. The proofs were supposed to be a gift to me from the photographer, so I only had to order images that I wanted to be larger. The family ruined most of the proofs. So I never ordered any copies for them and never gave them access to the photos again. They didn't get their beloved family portraits!

Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I think the mother was trying to document that everything was okay in case OP was going to come back later and demand reimbursement for "the damage".
