Common Core and other narrow world views disguised as "national standards" fail to see knowledge as a complexity requiring tons of critical thinking, being well-read, and knowing whether sources of information are reliable or misleading. Try Calvin Cooolidge, who might have stopped the great depression, but didn't/ Woodrow Wilson, who could have prevented U.S. involvement in Vietnam, but didn't. Robert Frost, the flowery poet who, behind the scenes, had no sympathy for worker a***e. James Baldwin and Malcolm X, who might have help the civil rights movement had they not been demonized. I could go on. Because people have no context for the world they inherited, they blindly repeat a lot of disastrous mistakes. I made a difference with my students, and they know to check out EVERYTHING
