Retired school librarian here. Common Core and other narrow world views disguised as "national standards" fail to see knowledge as a complexity requiring tons of critical thinking, being well-read, and knowing whether sources of information are reliable or misleading. People who are shocked by all the outrageous current events need to know that this is nowhere near the first time any of this has happened. Emotionally distresses Presidents? Try Calvin Cooolidge, who might have stopped the great depression, but didn't/ Woodrow Wilson, who could have prevented U.S. involvement in Vietnam, but didn't. Robert Frost, the flowery poet who, behind the scenes, had no sympathy for worker a***e. James Baldwin and Malcolm X, who might have help the civil rights movement had they not been demonized. I could go on. Because people have no context for the world they inherited, they blindly repeat a lot of disastrous mistakes. I made a difference with my students, and they know to check out EVERYTHING

48 years here as well. We've been through the same challenges as you. We made it with retail and teaching careers. Lots of humor, lots of being content, and yes, faith in Jesus----not the Jesus of "running the church, " but the Jesus of seeking out friends and neighbors in need and showing His love to them. We praise God for our marriage every day.

Anyone I have known who started their own business ended up exhausted, broke, and in deep debt. The people who facilitate people getting their own business tend to be the only ones who profit.

As a librarian, I never had time to read on the job. You can say, "What's the big deal about keeping useless old books in order?", but it is a big deal if someone needs that one tiny bit of information. Hats off to the Tacoma, Washington Public Library, whose attention to detail allowed my wife to retrace her roots and vividly visualize the lives of her ancestors.

People get Christianity and Christ like confused too!

Lack of self control is dangerous, not credit cards. I have one that I use for everything, and get cash back for using it. I pay the balance off each month, so no interest accrues, plus the credit card company is good with the record keeping so I don't have to.
