As a scientist, I understand the basics of how the actual Large Hadron Collider (LHC) works. Its essentially the worlds largest tube system built for the smallest of particles. Now imagine a typewriter that uses protons to type the letters 27 km away, but only after it misses the paper several million times. The heaviest impacts of the LHC are greater than the amount of energy the sun produces for size of the particles it is impacting. Imagine if you will taking two cars and shooting them toward each other from opposite sides of the solar system. Now accelerate those cars faster and faster toward each other. After they impact each other you take a snapshot of all the debris flying away from the impact, and that is how you have to figure out what the cars were originally made of. This is what physicists have to work with to understand our universe beyond math.
