Because you're making the assumption that she's the owner of the account. This is a voice on a phone. You have no idea what she's saying is true or if this circumstance is as she described. search YouTube for the phrase "This is how hackers hack you using simple social engineering" 2 minute video. Watch it and educate yourself. The information stolen can be used to gain access to an account, change passwords and information. This agent wasn't a hero, she was an idiot. And she was conned. I wouldn't be surprised if you look this "ex husband" up and find he never had a wife. The end result is she gave away personal information without knowing. That's why you can change information or close accounts, but you can't disclose information. She broke the cardinal rule because of a "story" which could have been a lie.
I know, this agent is insanely naive. You can feel bad for them. You can be sad, but you have quite literally opened your company up to a privacy lawsuit, and broadcasted the information online. You're a idiot. You can feel bad, you can commiserate, you can kick it up to management, but you CANNOT GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION to a rando on the phone. It's people like this that keep me paid well. Cyber security. Why does the company pay security specialists so much? Because people that "want to help" are so much more costly than paying people like me.

It is not only that, we have weekly reminder at work, to do not give any company information over the phone. If the company wants something from you, the come in person, or will use the company canals. And they will not ask you about some codes, on some cards to buy. Please be don´t that stupid.
I see the guys later on in this post getting downvoted for saying It's against company policy. There's a reason It's against company policy. search Google for DEF con *(hacker convention)... hell I'll show you a video... search YouTube for the phrase "This is how hackers hack you using simple social engineering" It has the number one phisher at that time manipulate a service agent into giving her confidential information. The only difference between this "ghosted wife" is the crying baby. A tool used by these guys to manipulate heartstrings.
