The thing is with a rule like ‘don’t wear your hat in class’ is that there needs to be a reason for it. If there is, explain it *before* asking him to remove his hat (often the person will happily comply without needing to be directly told to). If there isn’t, then why the heck should they? Seriously? There is a time and place to obey instructions without question, and that is during disasters and other emergencies, when emergency workers are telling you where to go and what to do. And I bet that never includes ‘you need to take your hat off’.

I've had reptiles. The wood that pet stores/reptile stores sell for reptile enclosures (like Zoo Med or Exo Terra brands) usually IS heat-treated, but they are usually dried/heat-treated in commercial kilns. If someone wants to heat-treat wood at home for their reptiles, they need to heat it to a much higher temperature than the professional kilns do - usually 250°F (aiming for a 140°F core temp) for at LEAST 1-2 hours. I have a feeling OP's roommate heard about home heat-treating wood and wanted to do it, but an air fryer is NOT the right tool for the job >_<
