Hospital linens are cleaned through a strict, industrial process designed to eliminate pathogens. Soiled items are bagged at the bedside in leak-proof liners, washed in commercial machines at high temperatures (160°F–180°F/70°C—80°C) using medical-grade detergents and disinfectants, and thoroughly heat-dried before being folded. These towels are significantly cleaner/more sterile than any you have at home. Your home washing machine sanitize cycle typically heats water to temperatures between 149°F and 165°F (65°C to 74°C). You don’t have access (generally) to the medical grade detergents and disinfectants they use. The drying process, again, is usually at a higher temperature than your domestic dryer can handle. The folding is also through a high temperature machine process. This is a decision based on squeamishness about prior use &/or a need for control. Your home towels are far more likely to do you and others harm because they’re not as clean as you think.

Treat them to donuts and coffee later. They will love you for it
