I'd have to hunt down my source again, but I read a few months ago that if it starts in youth, it is generally harmless, but if it begins later in life (usually mid to late 30s), it could be symptomatic of an underlying issue, including some autoimmune disorders. It happened to me for the first time this winter (I'm late 30s), so my doc and I are noting it, but not overly concerned.
