In high school (late 90s) I realised that there was a difference between being "cool" and being "popular." The cool kids really just hung out with the other cool kids, and sometimes their friends didn't even really like them. Whereas, the truly popular kids were the really charismatic ones who spoke to everyone. Being able to walk down the hall and say hello or talk to everyone (no matter who they are or their social status), that's popular. Being cool is something different. After learning that, I was still never cool in high school; but, I became popular just by being nice to everyone and talking to as many people as I could.
