To use a franchise that is beloved worldwide, Pokemon has had a girl option since Gold and Silver. They only stopped in Scarlet and Violet, but that's cause they no longer gender the protagonist.
Unironic use of "waifu" alert.

Honestly I remember them being in a wholly separate section of Toys R Us going back to Coleco times. We had to bring a card back to a desk and have them bring it out. It added a bit of ceremony to that blessed time we got Dr. Seuss's Fix Up The Mix Up Puzzler.
