The reason many of these Renaissance paintings translate so effortlessly into memes is that the artists were never really painting theology. They were painting people. Real people, hired from the streets and markets of Florence and Rome, were brought in to pose as saints and angels and biblical figures and told to hold an expression while someone spent weeks rendering it in extraordinary detail.
Nobody understood this more radically than Caravaggio, the ultimate chaos agent of the late Renaissance, who made it his entire mission to drag the divine down to street level. While his contemporaries were painting luminous, idealized saints with perfect skin and heavenly composure, Caravaggio was walking down to the Tiber River recruiting adult workers and tavern brawlers to pose as holy figures, and the Church was absolutely horrified by it.
His 1606 masterpiece depicting the end of the Virgin Mary’s life is the most notorious example. Commissioned as an altarpiece for a Carmelite church in Rome, it depicted the Virgin Mary as a woman who had just come to the end of her life, with bloated legs, a swollen belly, bare, dirty feet, and the unmistakable face of Maddalena Antognetti, a well-known local adult worker rumored to be Caravaggio's lover.
The monks who commissioned it took one look at the finished painting, recognized Lena immediately, and refused to hang it. The parishioners had also recognized her, which was arguably worse. The painting was rejected as vulgar and lacking in divinity. It is now considered one of the most important works in Western art history and lives in the Louvre.
The genre of art memes has been building quietly since at least 2010, when Tumblr started pairing classical paintings with modern captions and discovering that the combination worked at a frequency nobody had predicted. The format spread to Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, accumulating millions of followers across dozens of dedicated accounts.
An 18th-century self-portrait by French painter Joseph Ducreux went viral on 4chan and Reddit, and paired the painting with Old English or archaic translations of modern hip-hop lyrics. Pure art! "Who hath released the hounds?" has a particularly catchy ring to it.
The memes are funny because they are true, no matter the century they come from. But after a quick screenshot or a share to a group chat, they disappear into the feed like everything else. But the historic art and modern meme crossover deserves better than that.
This is where Very Ugly Plates comes in. The artist behind the account has been taking the images that live rent-free in our heads and putting them somewhere they genuinely belong: on ceramics. Plates, bowls, and mugs bearing the faces of dramatically suffering figures are adorned with hillariously out of place captions, turning them into functional objects you can eat off, drink from, and display with pride.
Bored Panda took a moment to speak with the genius artist behind Very Ugly Plates to ask her why audiences find it so satisfying to see a 17th-century figure spiraling over rent or dating app fatigue. "People like to be surprised by the contrast. It's something unexpected, and that's why it has this wow effect." It is a simple explanation for something that has accumulated millions of followers, but simplicity is usually where the best ideas live.
Her process for finding the right image is less systematic than you might expect. "Sometimes I see the painting and the right caption comes in a second," she told us. "I spend hours checking artworks and saving pictures I might use in the future because they have potential. Sometimes I have a caption and look for the right picture." The meme finds the painting. The painting finds the meme. Either way, something recognizable comes out the other side.
When she makes her plates, she thinks about the fact that they will stay with the person who buys them forever, and that shapes every creative decision she makes. "I only make jokes about universal situations that will be funny in 20, 40 years. I always avoid politics and short-life jokes." It is a remarkably disciplined approach for a medium that usually moves at the speed of a news cycle, and it explains why the plates feel like something worth keeping.
On the state of internet humor in 2026, she was characteristically direct. "I think nothing changed here. I only miss old internet without social media and algorithms. When you found some cool website, you always checked the links section. Now nobody except me has a links section. Please bring it back." We cannot help her with the algorithm, but we fully support the links section campaign.
