Christopher Lloyd, best known for his roles in Back to the Future and The Addams Family, had been preparing a special gift for fans since May ahead of his 88th birthday this month, teasing it as his “baby.”
It turned out to be his memoir, In My Own Time, which was unveiled on Tuesday, October 27.
Beyond reflecting on a life spent in the Hollywood spotlight, notably, the book explores a darker chapter of Lloyd’s past, detailing a personal struggle that threatened both his career and his life.

Christopher Lloyd made a startling confession about the fixation that put his career and life in jeopardy
Lloyd admitted to becoming dependent on both liquor and illicit substances in the 1970s.
In his newly released memoir, the actor recalled taking his first “snort” of powdered stimulant outside a comedy club in Los Angeles alongside a woman he had just met.
“That was all it took. I was hooked almost immediately. I loved it,” he wrote, adding that “before long it had a hold on me.”
Lloyd remembered being intoxicated and high during an argument with one of his girlfriends in 1983, when his hit sitcom Taxi was canceled after five seasons.
After spending the night at his nephew’s home, he returned to find that his partner had locked him out. In response, he began punching the windows.
“The next thing I remember, I was lying on the floor of my kitchen, bleeding out, and paramedics were attending to me,” he recalled.
“I later learned that I had lost so much blood that they had to give me plasma.”
Lloyd also revealed that he underwent surgery following the incident and subsequently needed physical therapy to ensure he would be “able to spread [his] fingers correctly.”
It took another decade of struggling with his dependency before the actor sought help.
A mental health expert helped Christopher Lloyd recognize the damage his habits were doing to his life
Lloyd recalled screenwriter Bob Gale pulling him aside after noticing that he was intoxicated while filming Back to the Future Part III in late 1989 and early 1990.
The incident led the actor to confront his struggles and seek a path toward sobriety.
In his memoir, he revealed that he entered rehabilitation in 1993 after speaking with his psychologist.
Lloyd remained at the facility for five weeks, describing the experience as “the beginning” but “not the end” of his struggles.
He acknowledged that he “relapsed a few times after that” before finally achieving lasting sobriety, which he said began on April 1 some years later.
Netizens shared mixed reactions to Lloyd’s confession about intoxication and dependency
“I admire people in the limelight who honestly document their highs but mostly lows,” one fan commented, adding that they had found Lloyd “brilliant” in Taxi.
“Lots of famous people have great success but serious personal problems. Glad Lloyd managed to pull through,” another person wrote.
A third commenter, however, accused those who turned to liquor and illicit substances of “taking the easy way out,” while a fourth echoed the sentiment, asking, “Are we supposed to consider him a victim?”
Several users, meanwhile, took the opportunity to remind others of the damaging consequences of such habits.
“You’ll be reduced to wasting your life on the couch while being angry and obnoxious,” one person warned.
“Remember you don’t have a dedicated team nor the resources to pull you out of your mess like Lloyd,” another added.
Lloyd’s confession also reminded a few of his character on Taxi
“So he really wasn’t faking it when he snorted the cookie,” one commenter said, referencing a scene involving Lloyd’s character, Jim Ignatowski.
“Marty, you’re just not thinking like a street d**ler,” another wrote, quoting one of his lines.
For those unfamiliar with the sitcom, Lloyd portrayed Jim, a burnt-out 1960s hippie whose eccentric personality was marked by memory lapses and a slow speech pattern.
However, Ignatowski was not always portrayed that way.
In a 1982 flashback episode titled The Road Not Taken, he appeared as an exceptionally sharp, straight-edge Harvard University undergraduate.
The character’s later traits were attributed to the effects of his prolonged and heavy substance misuse.
"He managed himself pretty well," a netizen said about Lloyd
