Some goodbyes are too difficult to say in person, so people find another way to make their words last. For Charlie Anderson-Read, that meant recording a message for the thousands of people who had followed her journey, knowing she might not be around when they finally watched it. The 41-year-old mum wanted to thank them for their kindness, share a few final thoughts, and leave them with a reminder to keep going, even when life gets unbearably hard.
Charlie passed away on Saturday morning, October 10, after living with an aggressive form of cancer for three years. Her wife, Louise, confirmed the heartbreaking news after previously telling followers that Charlie was nearing the end of her life and spending her final days at home. The family later shared that she was "now at peace" after an incredibly difficult journey.
Charlie Anderson-Read was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer at 38 before being re-diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bile duct cancer
Despite being given just six weeks to live, she underwent multiple treatments and continued fighting the illness for three years
Her health battle began in November 2023, when she was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer at just 38 years old. She was later diagnosed with terminal cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer affecting the bile ducts. Despite the devastating prognosis, Charlie continued to fight, undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted treatments, and even taking part in a clinical trial.
At one point, she was told she had just six weeks to live, yet she managed to spend years longer than expected with her loved ones. Throughout that time, Charlie shared the realities of her illness on Instagram through her account, @mummy_againstcancer. Her posts offered an honest look at the physical and emotional toll of living with terminal cancer, allowing people to follow her experiences beyond the usual brief updates about someone’s health.
Over time, more than 52,000 people began following her journey. Many were strangers who had never met her in person, but they still became part of the community that helped her through some of her darkest days.
Charlie never pretended the experience was easy. In a fundraiser, she described the journey as "exhausting and emotionally challenging", explaining that although she knew she did not have long, she was not ready to give up. She continued exploring treatment options for as long as she could, holding on to the extra time she might gain. Eventually, however, she exhausted the available options and had to shift her focus toward staying comfortable.
Charlie documented her cancer journey on Instagram, gaining more than 52,000 followers who supported her and donated money to help her wife, Louise, and young daughter
In one of her later updates, she admitted that things were becoming harder with each passing day. Knowing that her time was running short, Charlie recorded a video to be shared after she was gone. When the message was eventually posted, she greeted her followers with a small touch of humor, explaining that if they were watching, she was unfortunately no longer there.
She clarified that the video had been uploaded by someone on her behalf before thanking everyone who had sent messages and kind words. Their support, she said, had helped her through an incredibly difficult period. Sometimes, a message from someone you have never met can mean more than they will ever know.
She added that she was especially grateful to those who had donated money to help Louise and their four-year-old daughter, Florence, in the future. She also reflected on how much kindness she had encountered throughout the ordeal, saying the experience had shown her "how much good there is in the world". For someone facing such a painful reality, discovering that so many people were willing to show up for her family clearly meant a great deal.
Charlie was also candid about the things she would miss. While she was grateful for the life she had lived and insisted she had "absolutely no regrets whatsoever", she, however, wished she could have had more time with her family and gotten to watch Florence grow up.
After exhausting her treatment options, Charlie recorded a final video thanking her followers, reflecting on her life, and expressing sadness that she would not get to watch her daughter grow up
She acknowledged that there were many experiences she would never get to have, but she was thankful to have gained an extra two and a half years, perhaps even longer, than she had initially expected. Gratitude and heartbreak sat side by side in her final words.
Before ending the video, Charlie thanked the people who had become part of the online community she had built since 2023. She acknowledged how awful terminal illness was, not only for the person living with it but also for the family, friends, and strangers watching from the sidelines. Then she offered one last message, saying, "Keep fighting. Don’t let my passing have any negative effect on people, or on you. Keep fighting, you’ve got this."
